Gas vs Electric

A quick summary of the differences between gas-powered and electric pressure washers.

Examples of pressure washers: gas-powered (left) and electrical (right).

Here’s a quick list of the pros and cons between electric and gas-powered pressure washers.

Electric – Pros

  • Generally cheaper than gas-powered
  • Smaller motor means more compact design
  • Easier to store due to smaller size
  • Easier to operate
  • No hassle during winter time
  • Noise level is lower

Electric – Cons

  • Less power
  • Cord length may limit the areas that you can reach
  • Pump may overheat when used for longer periods

Gas-powered – Pros

  • More power
  • More portable due to not having to be tethered to an outlet
  • Heavy duty pumps mean it will last longer
  • Shorter cleaning time due to more power

Gas-powered – Cons

  • More expensive – upfront and over time
  • Needs a larger storage area
  • Loud
  • Maintenance can be a hassle

As you can see from the list, electric pressure washers are easier to deal with than gas powered. They are less expensive, easier to store and they are not as loud. Electric pressure washers are more than enough to do any cleaning outside your house.

Gas-powered washers, on the other hand, are more powerful and more expensive. These are more recommended for commercial use but you can still use it for your home if you want.

Design

The Ryobi is bulkier than the Greenworks model, but surprisingly, it is actually lighter.

A look at the Ryobi 2000 PSI Electric Pressure Washer (left) and the Greenworks 2000 PSI Electric Pressure Washer (right).

The Ryobi RY141900 is lightweight even though it looks bulky. It has a steel frame body for added durability and the handles are foam padded to provide a comfortable grip while transporting. As it is lightweight, it can easily be moved around. It has a 35 ft. power cord, 25 ft. hose and a removable soap tank. It also comes with a wand, spray handle and three nozzle tips: 15°, soap and turbo.

The Greenworks GPW2002 has a plastic frame body and surprisingly, it actually weighs more than the Ryobi at 37 lbs. Even though it weighs more, the difference is not that big and the GPW2002 is still easy to transport and move around. The design makes it easier for storing as it doesn’t need a lot of space. It comes with a 35 ft. power cord, 25 ft. hose and a soap tank. It also comes with a wand, spray handle, and four nozzle tips: 25°, 40°, soap, and turbo. That’s one more nozzle tip than the Ryobi.

Both models have a hose reel and onboard storage for easier accessory access. When it comes to overall design, they both have the essentials to make their respective pressure washers easy to use and transport.

Performance

Performance and power are almost the same with these two models.

Safety should be prioritized when using pressure washers. The extremely high pressure coming out of these tools can seriously hurt you if you are not careful. Both the Ryobi RY141900 and the Greenworks GPW2002 come with a trigger lock for safety.

The Ryobi RY141900 and the Greenworks GPW2002 are pretty much the same when it comes to power. Both of these models sport a 13 amp motor that can generate a maximum of 2000 PSI of pressure. They both also have a GPM of 1.2 and 2400CU (cleaning units).

The two models do differ when it comes to the included nozzle tips and this can make one unit more suitable for your needs than the other. Both of them come with a turbo and soap nozzle. The Ryobi comes with a 15° nozzle tip while the Greenworks come with a 25° and 40° tips. Lower angles result in a narrower spread of water but it has more power making it suitable for removing coatings such as paint or rust. Higher angles result in a wider spread, making it more suitable for cleaning as the pressure is lower and it covers a wider area. Higher angled nozzle tips are also suitable for your car, furniture or anything that you don’t want to damage as the pressure is more gentle.

You can purchase nozzle tips separately so if you plan on doing so, then there really isn’t much difference between the two models when it comes to performance.

Verdict

As their performance is basically the same, the decision as to which one you will get comes down to your preferred design and accessories.

The Ryobi RY141900 is lightweight and it has a steel frame body, making it more durable. However, it is bulkier and comes with one less nozzle tip than the Greenworks. If you are more concerned with durability and you don’t mind the one less nozzle tip, then this is the one you should get.

The Greenworks GPW2002 is easier to store as it has a less bulky design. It also comes with one more nozzle tip than the Ryobi. However, the plastic frame might be an issue in the long run, but so far, no one has complained about it. If you want an electric pressure washer for general cleaning, then this one is the better choice.
