Nespresso has revolutionized the way we enjoy coffee at home with its innovative pod machines. In recent years, its Vertuo series has gained popularity among coffee aficionados and casual coffee lovers. Known for their versatility, convenience, and rich taste, Vertuo coffee makers have become a go-to choice for those who appreciate a good cup of coffee or espresso.
The Vertuo Next is the medium-size model from the lineup. It boasts a stylish and slim design and more brewing sizes. If you’re looking for something more compact, the Vertuo Pop is a compelling alternative. Although smaller, it offers the same brew performance while selling for less.
Which one should you buy? Below, we compared the two coffee and espresso makers to help you decide.
Nespresso Vertuo Pop vs Next Comparison Chart
Nespresso’s Vertuo Pop is a more compact coffee pod machine than the Vertuo Next
The Nespresso Vertuo Pop and Vertuo Next are beautifully-designed coffee machines combining style and functionality. Because of its height, the Next appears slimmer — even sleeker — than the Pop. If you prefer a more compact machine, the Pop weighs less and stands less than 10 inches tall. This should make it a better option if you’re worried about overhead space.
Both pod machines brandish a modern design highlighted by smooth lines and curved edges. The Vertuo Pop and Next also feature a matte finish. Not only does this look great, but it also minimizes fingerprints and smudges on their surfaces. Although you can get both machines in several colors, the Next offers more variants. With the Pop, however, you get a selection of vibrant colors that evok those found on more premium coffee pod machines.
The Pop’s compact design translates to a ssmaller water tank capacity of 0.6 liters. Moreover, the capsule bin can only hold a maximum of 8 pods, requiring more frequent emptying than the Next.
Nespresso also reduced the space beneath the Pop’s brew head while retaining the drip tray. If you intend to use the tray, the maximum cup height is limited to 8cm, suitable only for espresso cups. And while the tray is detachable, accommodating anything larger than a standard mug remains a challenge. With the Next, the space can fit as large as a carafe.
Unlike with the Vertuo Plus, however, the Pop and Next’s lid functionality is not automatic. Instead, they require manual opening using a slider. Once the capsule is inserted into the holder, the machine must be manually closed.
Performance and Compatibility
The Vertuo Pop and Next have the same one-touch brewing operation and capsule compatibility.
The Vertuo lineup’s biggest selling point is its ease of use. Coffee makers, including pod machines, seem intimidating. On the Vertuo Pop and Next, brewing is as simple as popping in a compatible pod. Moreover, you only need to press one button to start brewing or descaling.
How do these coffee makers do it? Well, both machines use a unique barcode system that adjusts the brewing parameters according to the specific capsule, ensuring optimal extraction. Once you pop in a capsule, the machinesimply reads its barcode and adjusts the brewing parameters using Nespresso’s Centrifusion technology.
With the Pop and Next you get the following brewing sizes which are standard across the Vertuo lineup: espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, and coffee. And since it offers more space under the spout, the Vertuo Next also offers a Carafe brew size, which is 18 oz.
The only caveat is that Vertuo coffee makers are only compatible with Vertuo capsules. And while there are over 40 different capsules to choose from, they’re only available from Nespresso. In case you plan to get the Carafe capsules for the Next, it’s worth noting they only come in 7 pods per sleeve instead of the usual 10.
Connectivity and Other Features
The Vertuo Pop and Next pair with a smartphone app that, while convenient, has limited functions.
Nespresso’s Vertuo Pop and Next come with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Through it, you can pair the machines to Nespresso’s smartphone app. Although it sounds futuristic, the app doesn’t do a whole lot. For one thing, you can’t actually start the brewing process remotely.
You can start the cleaning process from the app, but you’ll need to be at the machine to oversee rinsing, descaling, or emptying your machine. As it stands, the connectivity features are there to run remote software updates for your machine, receive alerts, or get video assistance.
The other features are more practical. Both Vertuo coffee pod machines have an energy saving mode where they automatically shut off after two minutes. Their water tanks and drips trays are also removable, making clean up and maintenance a breeze.
If you want a lightweight and compact coffee pod machine, opt for the Vertuo Pop. But if you prefer having a Carafe brew size, get the Vertuo Next.
Since the Nespresso Vertuo Pop and Vertuo Next are functionally similar, choosing between the two boils down to size preference. If you need a more compact coffee pod machine, then the Pop is a compelling purchase. However, it’s smaller dimensions translates to more frequent refilling of the water tank and capsule storage. It’s reduced space also means you miss out on a Carafe brew size, an option available on the Vertuo Next. Lastly, the Vertuo Next is currently available only in the UK.
