Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista vs One-Touch (2022): Simplified Espresso Maker Comparison

If you’re currently looking to buy an espresso maker, it’s nice that there are a lot of options available. There are espresso machines that are operated manually, while there are some that are fully automatic. Manual machines can yield excellent tasting coffee, but you’ll need to spend more time with them. Automatic espresso makers, on the other hand, can hasten the process without sacrificing quality, but you’ll find that most of them cost an arm and a leg. As a middle ground option, a semi-automatic espresso maker can be a good compromise.

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista and the Mr. Coffee One-Touch are relatively inexpensive semi-automatic espresso makers that boast features such as automatic milk frothers and easy to use control panels. If you’re interested in getting a semi-automatic espresso maker, these two are worthwhile considerations. So which one of these two should you buy? We compare the two to help you decide.

Looks-wise, both are modern looking machines with a sleek design that will fit in any kitchen. The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista has three color options: silver, white and red. All three have black details that lend to their good overall aesthetics. On the other hand, the Mr. Coffee One-Touch is only available in silver with black details.

They are both compact coffee makers that won’t take up too much space on top of your kitchen counter. That said, the Cafe Barista is much smaller than the One-Touch. It is also lighter, weighing only 10.37 lbs while the One-Touch weighs 14.2 lbs. Regardless, both are compact machines that leave a small footprint and they are light enough for easy storage.

The two coffee makers have many removable parts that make them easy to clean and maintain. The water tank of the Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista is located at the back and its milk reservoir is at the right side. In contrast, the water and milk reservoir of the One-Touch are both at the right side. These are removable for easy filling and for cleaning.

One big difference between the two is the size of their drip trays. The drip tray of the Cafe Barista can only fit one mug or cup, while the drip tray of the One-Touch can fit one large mug or two small cups. With the One-Touch, you can save a lot of time if you need to serve espresso shots to several people.

Ease of Use

The improved control panel of the Mr. Coffee One-Touch is more intuitive than the one on the Cafe Barista.

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista (left) and One-Touch (right) have control panels that are easy to use.

The control panel of the Mr. Coffee One-Touch is much improved. It’s more user-friendly and intuitive than the one on the Cafe Barista. Instead of having a few buttons with multiple functions, the One-Touch now has separate buttons for all of its functions. This is much easier to operate since you don’t have to cycle through different functions with just a few buttons.

When using either machine for the first time, it’s recommended that you first wash all the removable parts with soap and water. You also have to prime them by running a few cycles with just water. After that, both are ready to be used to make espressos, cappuccinos or lattes.

Making espresso with the Cafe Barista is very simple. You just choose the filter size for either single or double, place the grounds and press down with the tamper. Attach the portafilter to the machine then press the “Espresso” button once or twice (single or double) then the machine will dispense your espresso. It’s the same process with the One-Touch.

When making cappuccino or latte, it’s pretty much the same process, but you’ll have to fill the milk reservoir with milk and press either the “Cappuccino” or “Latte” buttons. You can control the amount of milk froth by using the dial on top of their milk reservoirs. The machines will then dispense the right amount depending on the cup size that you chose.

Performance

The Mr. Coffee One-Touch is more consistent and stable when it comes to milk and espresso temperature.

Both the Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista (left) and One-Touch have an automatic milk frother.

In terms of performance, the Mr. Coffee One-Touch comes with a few improvements that certainly make it a better machine. The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista has a total power output of 1040 watts and it has two thermo couples as its heating element. The much improved Mr. Coffee One-Touch, on the other hand, has three thermo couples and a higher output of 1170 watts. This means that the One-Touch can be more consistent when it comes to milk and coffee temperature.

Another area where the One-Touch is improved is in its maximum pressure. The Cafe Barista has 15 bar of pressure, which is more than enough to make espresso, but the One-Touch improves on that by having 19 bar of pressure. This improvement is a bit pointless since a machine with 6 to 8 bar will do a good job of making espresso. But it is still an improvement so it’s worth mentioning.

Maintenance and Cleaning

The two have the same cleaning process that can be time consuming.

Cleaning the two machines can take a lot of time since there are a lot of removable parts and you are required to run a couple of cycles with them using only water to clean their internals. Unfortunately, most of the removable parts are not dishwasher safe, so you’ll have to clean them manually. The only parts that you can leave in the dishwasher are the milk tanks and their lids.

Verdict

We recommend that you buy the Mr. Coffee One-Touch over the Cafe Barista since it is much improved and will deliver better quality espresso.
