Zinus vs Lucid (2022): Which Low-Cost Memory Foam Mattress Is Better For Your Sleep?

One of the reasons why people put up with their old, ratty mattresses for so long is because they don’t want to spend big money on a new one. While it’s true that a lot of the mattresses out there will cost you an arm and a leg, there are also high-quality ones that are priced reasonably. Two good examples of this are the Zinus and Lucid mattresses, both well-loved for offering great value for money. To help you decide which memory foam mattress is the better fit for you and your sleep, here’s an in-depth comparison that covers their construction and other features.

Both Zinus and Lucid are memory foam mattresses but are different in construction.

Zinus vs Lucid construction
Both the Zinus and Lucid mattresses are 12 inches thick.

Both Zinus and Lucid are memory foam mattresses but they’re quite different in terms of construction.

For the Zinus mattress, it’s best known for its 2-inch Biofoam. This proprietary topmost layer has an open-cell structure and is infused with green tea and castor oil, making it great at fighting off mold. Underneath this is the 3-inch comfort foam which acts as a transition layer, supporting your body weight so that you can maintain proper spinal alignment while you sleep. At the very bottom, you’ll find the 5-inch foam base layer. Thanks to its high-density construction, there’s better motion absorption and you’ll feel more comfortable overall.

Now for the Lucid mattress. Up top, there’s the 3-inch ventilated gel memory foam, responsible for maintaining good airflow between all the layers. Thanks to its cooling gel and perforations, you get to sleep cooler at night. Below that is the 1-inch charcoal-infused foam which makes sure that bacteria and mold have no chance of taking over the mattress. It also acts as a transition layer that works together with the base to support your body. And for the very last layer, there’s the 8-inch dense core that adapts to your shape and absorbs motion at the same time.

The Zinus mattress has deeper sinkage than the Lucid mattress.

Zinus vs Lucid sinkage
Both the Zinus (left) and Lucid (right) mattresses have thick bases that prevent too much sinkage.

Sinkage may sound bad but the right amount of it actually contributes to comfort. The good thing is that both the Zinus and Lucid mattresses have medium firmness which means they should be able to strike a good balance between sinkage and support.

We can say that this is very true for the Lucid mattress. Its gel memory foam layer allows for just the right amount of sinkage, able to conform to the shape of your body and relieve pressure from your joints. And because this layer has an open-cell structure, it feels quite spongy underneath your weight. You don’t have to worry about sinking too much and feeling stuck though because the thick base layer is able to respond well to the pressure and counteracts it with its density.

As for the Zinus mattress, its topmost layer allows for a deeper sink. Those who like to feel like they’re being hugged throughout the night will appreciate this experience. But just like with the Lucid mattress, the dense base layer does a good job of making sure that your spine isn’t curving too much and that you’re still in proper alignment. However, those who sleep on their stomachs or are on the heavier side might find that the sinkage on the Zinus mattress is a bit too much.

The Lucid mattress provides a more uniform support than the Zinus mattress.

Zinus vs Lucid support
The Lucid mattress (right) has better edge support than the Zinus mattress (left).

Support is an important factor when choosing a mattress because obviously, you don’t want to wake up feeling all achy from having your spine out of proper alignment the entire night. Fortunately, both the Zinus and Lucid mattresses offer good support although they don’t have equal scores.

The Zinus mattress is able to support all sleeping styles and offers uniform support all throughout its surface up until you get to the sides. If you roll over close to the edge, you might feel that the support is weaker in those areas. While this might not be such a huge issue if you’re average in weight, those who are on the heavier side might want to look for a mattress that has better edge support.

This is where the Lucid mattress comes in. It’s definitely sturdier and you’ll feel more supported, even if you’re perched on the edge of the mattress. So even if you’re on the heavier side, you can be sure that your weight will be distributed evenly and that you’ll be able to enjoy the perfect balance of sinkage and support. The Lucid mattress’ level of support comes pretty close to that of higher-end mattresses so that’s quite impressive.

Motion Transfer

Both the Zinus and Lucid mattresses have low motion transfer.

Zinus vs Lucid motion transfer
Both the Zinus and Lucid mattresses have transitional layers that are good at absorbing motion and transferring them to the base.

If you share a bed with a restless sleeper or you yourself are the cause of your partner’s sleep disruption, it’s important that you get a mattress that has low motion transfer. The good news is that the Zinus and Lucid mattresses score high in this area. We have their transition layers to thank for this, both effective in absorbing movement and passing them along to the thick base. This way, you’ll never be bothered or be a bother while you’re asleep.

The Lucid mattress wins against the Zinus mattress for its perfect balance of support and comfort.

For their low price points, they’re constructed very well, are made with quality materials, and can significantly improve the quality of your sleep. But if we’re splitting hairs, we have to name the Lucid mattress as our winner. The fact that it’s able to strike the perfect balance between support and comfort gives it a big edge over the Zinus mattress. This makes the Lucid mattress ideal for all kinds of sleepers, whether you sleep on your back or your stomach, or whether you’re on the light, average, or heavy side.
