Ancestry + Traits Service

This 23andMe DNA testing service tells you data on your ethnicity and ancestral roots and how your genes influence some of your traits

What-Does-23andMe-Tell-You

23and Me offers three services you can choose from:

  • Ancestry + Traits Service
  • Health + Ancestry Service
  • VIP Health + Ancestry Service

The starter 23andMe Ancestry + Traits service includes a detailed Ancestry report, Traits report, automatic family tree builder, and DNA relative finder. What the Ancestry report will tell you is your ethnic breakdown (e.g. 20% Iberian, 30% Native America, etc), ancestral timeline, and a chromosome painting of your ancestry composition.

In the Traits report, you will discover how your genetic make-up influences some traits you have such as having a bald spot, hair that grays easily, freckles, and preference for a certain taste, among many others. 23andMe analyzes specific genetic markers in your DNA and how your combination of variants matches other people’s with the same traits.

Health + Ancestry Service

What this DNA testing service can tell you are what’s included in the Ancestry + DNA service plus some of your health predispositions and carrier status

what 23andme health + ancestry tells you
Sample Health Disposition reports and Carrier Status reports

If you opt for the 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service, you will get the inclusions in the starter DNA testing service together with detailed health reports. Specifically, these health reports include the following:

  • 10+ Health Predisposition reports
  • 5+ Wellness reports
  • 40+ Carrier Status reports

Health Predisposition Reports

What the Health Predisposition reports will tell you are your genetic risks and likelihood of getting certain health conditions as analyzed in specific variants of the disease. This includes genetic risks for diseases like Type 2 diabetes, ovarian and breast cancer (select variants of BRCA1/BRCA2), very high cholesterol, Parkinson’s disease, and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, to name a few. Carrier Status Reports

Another report you will get in this service is the Carrier Status report which will give you an idea of whether you are a carrier of certain diseases and risk passing it on to your future generations. 23andMe can give reports on whether you carry select genetic variants of diseases such as Bloom Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Familial Mediterranean Fever, and Sickle Cell Anemia, to name some. Take note though that there are many variants of each disease and 23andMe only analyzes a few of them.

Wellness Reports

The 23andMe Wellness report will tell you what healthy habits you can start doing to address your health predispositions. For example, if your genes show that you are predisposed to weigh 10 percent less than average, the report will generate health habits that have resulted in weighing less than the average. This may include habits like eating less red meat, sleeping for 7 to 8 hours, eating 2 to 4 servings of vegetables, and the like.

Please do note that these health reports should not serve as a diagnosis and substitute a visit to your trusted physician.

VIP Health + Ancestry: Get Results Faster

The VIP service will tell you the same things, but your processing time will be shorter

Your DNA sample will be extracted right away once it reaches the laboratory

If you avail of the 23andMe VIP Health + Ancestry testing service, you will still get the same reports as you would in the Health + Ancestry package mentioned above, but you will be given priority laboratory processing. As the regular service takes two to three weeks to process your DNA results, availing of the VIP service means you can get your Ancestry, Traits, and Health reports much faster than that.

This service also comes with premium customer support where a trained expert from 23andMe will answer any questions you may have about your DNA results. A trained expert will also give you a personalized walkthrough to explain your DNA results and not just the typical Ancestry, Traits, and Health reports that everyone gets.
