The Weber SmokeFire EX6 has a wider grilling surface than the SmokeFire EX4.
Essentially, the only difference between the Weber SmokeFire EX4 and EX6 is their widths. The EX4 has a 24-inch wide cooking space while the EX6 has a wider 36-inch area. Everything else is the same. Even their high-capacity hoppers, which you’d expect to be larger on the EX6 grill, is the same, capable of storing an entire 20 lb. bag of Weber pellets.
The Weber SmokeFire’s steel body is coated with a porcelain enameled finish that protects it from harsh weather. It has double-walled sides to insulate its heat within and keep its grill at controlled temperatures. At its back are exhaust vents that blow hot air onto the hopper, so care should be taken when refilling pellets while cooking. Unlike most grills, the SmokeFire’s hopper is long and shallow instead of tall and boxy.
Opening the lids of the SmokeFire EX4 and EX6 reveals the double cooking grates made of plated steel. The EX4’s main grate is 24 x 18 inches while the EX6’s is 36 x 18 inches. Underneath the bottom grate are stainless steel Flavorizer bars that are designed for more even heat distribution throughout the interior. This doesn’t black the flames from the firepot like other traditional pellet grills that use a diffuser plate.

As an all-in-one outdoor cooking equipment, the Weber SmokeFire wood pellet grill has tremendous versatility thanks to its 200 to 600°F range. Its Flavorizer bars, which are inverted V-shaped, expose meat to direct flame and infrared radiation more than other pellet smokers. The result is that you can sear steaks on it without resorting to griddles or hot pans. You’ll also be able to use it to cook ribs, pulled pork, burgers, veggies, and even pizza.
A weather-resistant LCD display on the right side of either Weber EX4 or EX6 allows you to set the temperature, start a timer, or get grilling assistance. Weber is introducing new features via the Weber Connect app as well. One of these is SmokeBoost, which gives your food even more wood fired flavor. You can also use it to check whether your food is ready to serve using food readiness countdowns and doneness alerts.
Initial tests on the Weber SmokeFire showed that its grilling surface gets a bit hotter from left to right. This can be more pronounced on the larger SmokeFire EX6, so it’s advised that you leave meats on the left side a bit longer.
Safety and Maintenance
Both Weber SmokeFire EX4 and EX6 grills have the same safety features.
Assembling either Weber SmokeFire grill out of the box needs to be done with care, following each step precisely. Improper assembly can result in hazards or malfunctions, and is one of the most common reasons that users have when reporting issues with their grills. That said, the SmokeFire could certainly be designed better so as to present only a single logical way of assembling it. Weber recommends using its free assembly app, BILT, for the SmokeFire EX4 and EX6.
After putting it together, you should also connect it via Wi-Fi to download firmware updates, which is mentioned on the manual. This is a very important step as Weber continues to make improvements on the functionalities of both the SmokeFire grill and the Weber Connect app. Some users who skipped this have found fewer smart features or else encountered other problems they had difficulties troubleshooting.
The Weber SmokeFire EX4 and EX6 have an ash and grease drawer under the firepot, enabling easier maintenance. Ash drops down from the firepot to collect into a tray, preventing it from reaching your food. Weber recommends cleaning up the drawer and the grease drains every 20 hours of operation, with a vacuum if possible.

Because both wood pellet grills offer the same features and only differ in size, we recommend the Weber SmokeFire EX4 since it’s a bit more affordable while still offering plenty of grilling surface space. Yes, but Weber recommends using only their own brand of pellets for both SmokeFire EX4 and EX6. Weber pellets are smaller in diameter than other brands and thicker pellets can sometimes get jammed in the auger chute, causing startup problems. Using other pellet brands will also not void the warranty.
For low temperatures and slow cooks, the Weber SmokeFire EX4 and EX6 will consume around 1 to 2 pounds per hour. On higher temperature settings, such as 500°F and above, they’ll burn through 3 to 5 pounds per hour.
Generally, the SmokeFire grills can reach 200°F in 8 to 10 minutes and 600°F in 15 to 18 minutes. Environmental factors and pellet choice can affect these estimations, however.
