How They Work

The Thermacell E55 and Radius are rechargeable mosquito repellents with battery-powered heaters that activate repellent refills.

Thermacell E55 vs Radius How They Work
Setting up and using these area mosquito repellents is as easy as four steps.

Thermacell area mosquito repellents are some of the most effective in the market today. You can get them either as a battery-powered model or a fuel-powered one. Unlike traditional solutions, however, these devices don’t employ scents, sprays, lights, or even coils.

Instead, the Thermacell E55 and Radius use cartridges with the active ingredient Metofluthrin. These cartridges are then heated by a battery-powered heater inside the repeller. This action then activates a powerful scent-free and DEET-free repellent that forms a protection zone.

What’s great about Thermacell’s repellents is that you can set up multiple devices to expand your protection radius. They’re also travel-friendly and operate in any elevation. Plus, both the E55 and Radius are easy to use, thanks to their one-touch operation.

The Thermacell E55 resembles Bluetooth speakers and humidifiers from afar, while the Radius sports a more portable, rectangular form.

Thermacell E55 vs Radius Design Comparison
This side-by-side comparison shows how much smaller the Thermacell Radius is compared to the E55.

While the Thermacell E55 and Radius are anchored on the same technology, they differ in design. The E55 sports a cylindrical shape that bulges near the base. From afar, it looks like a portable Bluetooth speaker, and at times even resembles a humidifier. On the other hand, the Radius has a more rectangular form, resulting in a larger lid.

The E55’s power button is surrounded by a control panel ring. This feature of the repeller communicates the status of the device โ€” including battery life โ€” through indicator lights. The power button of the Thermacell Radius also illuminates with a ring light for various functions. However, its battery indicator is nearer the base compared to the E55.

Aside from these differences, the rest of the external components are the same. Both the Thermacell E55 and radius feature a diffuser vent on top. Below the power buttons, users will also find the USB port for charging. While both are small enough to be closed by the hand, the Radius is more portable thanks to its shape and size. It also weighs half that of the E55.

Homeowners can get the Thermacell E55 and Radius in either Black or Blue variants.

Performance and Battery Life

The Thermacell E55 has a larger protection radius, while the Thermacell Radius offers a longer battery life.

Thermacell E55 vs Radius Performance Review
The 20-feet protection zone of the E55 is a bump from the 15-feet protection zone of the Radius.

With its slight increase in size, the Thermacell E55 delivers better performance. The battery-powered repellent is effective up to 20 feet, a nice bump from the 15-feet coverage of the Thermacell Radius. But since they use the same type of refill, the cartridges on both devices offer the same 12-hour protection. Where the Radius has an edge, however, is battery life. It boasts a 6.5-hour runtime compared to the E55’s 5.5-hour battery life.

Besides its protection zones and battery life, the Thermacell E55 and Radius offer a couple of convenience features. Both repellents, for instance, are TSA-compliant. They can also operate while charging and are equipped with an automatic shut-off timer after 2 hours of use.

Refills and Warranty

Here’s a look inside the box of the Thermacell E55 (left) and Radius (right).

A defining feature of Thermacell’s battery-powered repellents is the refills. Outside of the 12-hour refills included in a purchase of the E55 and Radius, there are also 40-hour variants. These repellent refills are also scent-free, fully sealed, and spill-proof. If you’re looking to stock on more of them, a value pack with three 40-hour refills is also available.

Now both devices carry a two-year warranty. This can be extended to three (3) years if the devices are officially registered via the Thermacell website.

The Thermacell E55 is a better battery-powered mosquito repellent than the Thermacell Radius.

Whether you opt for the Thermacell E55 or the Thermacell Radius, you’re getting a tried-and-tested area mosquito repellent. Both use the same diffusing technology in the first place. Apart from being rechargeable, they boast comparable intuitive controls, including a multi-functional power button. Suffice to say, the E55 and Radius are more convenient options over Thermacell’s fuel-powered repellents.

Between the two, however, the E55 is a better purchase. The sleek-looking device offers a larger protection zone and is less expensive than the Radius. And while the Radius does offer a longer battery life, the E55 can still operate while charging, which renders the Radius’ advantage negligible.
