Tempur-Pedic vs Tuft and Needle (2022): Which Mattress is the Better Choice?

Shopping online for a mattress has never been easier. There are countless brands that offer quality mattresses, and two of them are Tuft and Needle and Tempur-Pedic. These two are very different, with Tuft and Needle being a more budget-friendly option and Tempur-Pedic known more for their luxury mattresses.

In this comparison, we take a look at the Tuft and Needle Original and the Tempur-Cloud Prima. Both of these are all-foam mattresses and we chose to pit the Tempur-Cloud against the T&N Original because it is the most affordable of all the Tempur-Pedic mattresses.

The Tempur-Pedic mattress uses their TEMPUR material while the Tuft and Needle uses their own proprietary Adaptive foam.

Breakdown of the layers of the Tempur-Cloud (left) and the T&N Original (right).

For the construction of the mattresses, we’ll first take a look at the Tempur-Cloud. It is a 10″ mattress with four layers of foam. The mattress includes a high-loft removable and washable cover. This cover has a 2-layer construction with emphasis on cooling for a more comfortable sleep.

The comfort layer uses TEMPUR-ES (extra soft) material for a soft feel. Below this is the support layer using TEMPUR material. This layer acts as the transition layer that provides both additional comfort and support. The base layer acts as the support for the mattress as well as the sleeper. It is designed to provide additional cooling.

As for the Tuft and Needle Original, it is also a 10″ mattress and it has a 2-layer design. The cover is a blend of micro polyamide and polyester and the result is a soft cover.

The comfort layer of the T&N Original is a proprietary Adaptive foam. This foam has properties of both memory foam and latex. The biggest advantage of using this foam is that it removes the issues that are usually found in both memory foam and latex such as heat trapping. The base layer is a 6.5-inch polyfoam and this layer acts as the support for the mattress and it also has cooling properties to prevent heat.

Feel and Performance

The Tempur-Cloud is softer than the Tuft and Needle Original.

A look at both the Tempur-Cloud Prima (left) and the Tuft and Needle Original (right).

When it comes to firmness, the Tempur-Cloud Prima is rated as a medium-soft mattress while the Tuft and Needle Original is medium-firm.

As for comfort, they are also very different. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known for their slow sinking memory foam feel. You will slowly sink into the mattress as you lay down and this can be very comfortable. However, it also has its drawbacks. One is movemen–it can be hard to move around if you are “in” the mattress. Another is heat retention. Since the foam is wrapped around your body, heat trapping can be an issue.

The Tuft and Needle Original is the opposite of the Tempur-Cloud when it comes to comfort. You won’t be sinking into the mattress while you lay down. The Adaptive foam used by T&N still provides body contouring, but not to the level of TEMPUR materials. You will get more bounce, responsiveness and it’s easier to move around on the T&N Original.

Motion isolation is great for both mattresses with the Tempur-Cloud having an advantage due to the materials used in the comfort layer. Off-gassing is not too bad for both models. As for cooling, the Tuft and Needle has the advantage. It doesn’t trap as much heat and you will be able to sleep cooler.

Both companies offer 10-year warranties and 100-night sleep trials.

Shopping online for mattresses is easier due to companies offering sleep trials.

For warranty, both Tuft and Needle and Tempur-Pedic offer 10 years. The duration is the same but there are a few differences when it comes to the warranty’s specifics.

Both of them also offer 100 nights for the sleep trial. You can return the mattress anytime before the 100 nights are up. This takes the risk away when purchasing a mattress online.

If you have the money and you want a luxury mattress experience, you should go with the Tempur-Cloud Prima. For the budget-conscious, choose the Tuft and Needle Original, a high-quality mattress at an affordable price.

The Tempur-Cloud Prima is great for people that want the slow-sinking memory foam effect that Tempur-Pedic is known for. The mattress is also great for combination sleepers but will work best for people that sleep on their sides. The medium-soft firmness will relieve pressure from your shoulders, hips and knees. The mattress is a bit pricey so you should definitely put that into consideration.

For people that are on a budget, the Tuft and Needle Original is the perfect choice. It is a very comfortable mattress at a very attractive price. The medium-firm rating of the mattress is great for people that sleep on their back or on their stomach.
