Design and Build Quality

The Sonos Move is heavier and bigger than the HomePod, but the Sonos Move is weather-resistant and you can set it up anywhere.

Sonos Move vs HomePod Design
Unlike the HomePod (left), the Sonos Move (right) comes with a handle that you can use to carry it around.

The Sonos Move is oval in shape to accommodate the battery design. The Sonos Move has a height of 10 inches while the HomePod is shorter at 6.8 inches. In terms of weight, the Sonos Move is much heavier and weighs 6.61 pounds as compared to the HomePod that only weighs 5.5 pounds. In terms of the finish, the HomePod is cylindrical in shape and is available in white or space gray while the Sonos Move has a black grille and is only available in a smooth black color tone.

The Sonos Move has an IP56 rating and has an edge over the HomePod when it comes to weather-resistant capabilities. This means that you can bring the Sonos with you near the pool or even in the shower. On the other hand, the HomePod is not waterproof so you have to make sure to keep it away from any form of liquids. The HomePod is also fragile and could easily break when dropped while the Sonos Move is protected with a shock-resistant case that can handle minor falls and drops.

Audio Quality

The Sonos Move can get extremely loud and is able to fill large rooms with clear audio, but the HomePod has a clearer, superior music quality.

Sonos Move vs HomePod Audio Quality
The HomePod (left) has a balanced sound profile unlike the Sonos Move (right) which tends to sound compressed at high volume.

Unlike the Sonos Move, the HomePod has advanced audio components such as seven tweeters, a high-excursion subwoofer, and six microphones. Not to mention that each tweeter has its own custom driver. The subwoofer also has its own amplifier. Undoubtedly, the audio quality of the HomePod is more superior when compared to the Sonos Move’s single down-firing tweeter and one mid subwoofer.

The HomePod is equipped with an A8 chip that produces a more powerful, detailed sound when placed in large rooms and played at high volume. You won’t hear any delays or echoes but simply a clear, fading sound when you get too far from the speaker. On the other hand, the Sonos Move has excellent sound quality. However, the bass is too aggressive and tends to sound muffled and compressed at high volume.

Both smart speakers have their own way of producing high-quality sound. The Sonos Move is equipped with Trueplay software that allows you to tune your Sonos Move according to the size of the room. On the other hand, the HomePod is equipped with spatial awareness that automatically analyzes the environment and adjusts the sound accordingly.

Set-Up and Controls

The HomePod can be paired with another HomePod.

Sonos Move vs HomePod Setup and Controls
The Sonos Move can seamlessly integrate with other Sonos products.

The HomePod and the Sonos Move are both equipped with Apple Airplay 2 which you can use to stream music to multiple compatible speakers. It’s almost effortless to set up the HomePod to your Apple device. You can place your Apple device near the HomePod and it will automatically transfer the audio from your device straight to the HomePod. You can connect both speakers to a 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz internet connection for better performance.

The Sonos Move uses Alexa while the HomePod uses Siri. Both can answer basic questions such as reminders, weather, calendar events, and many more. However, Alexa is able to process thousands of skills, making it a complete virtual assistant over Siri. You can also use Alexa to command other devices linked to the Sonos Move and this is something that Siri is unable to process yet.

Aside from Alexa, the Sonos Move can also integrate with Google Assistant, while the HomePod only communicates with Siri and the Apple Homekit. This makes the Sonos Move more flexible when it comes to hands-free operation.

Battery

The Sonos Move can play music up to 10 hours on battery, while the HomePod needs to be plugged in to function.

Sonos Move vs HomePod Battery
The HomePod (left) and the Sonos Move (right) can both function when plugged in via USB or AC power.

There is a big difference between the Sonos Move and the HomePod when it comes to power. You can use the Sonos Move continuously for 10 hours on battery, but this will depend on the level of volume. However, this is still a short amount of time as compared to other portable wireless speakers that can last up to 12 hours or 20 hours. In addition, some functions of the Sonos Move such as the Sonos App will not work when it’s not plugged in. On the other hand, the HomePod only works when plugged in and does not run on battery power.

Verdict

The HomePod offers better value for your money, but if you want a speaker that is water-resistant and that you can carry around, get the Sonos Move instead.

Overall, both the Sonos Move and the HomePod deliver excellent music quality. It all comes down to your preference especially when it comes to sound quality and price. If you want a portable wireless speaker that you can carry around with you and at the same time produce excellent sound, then the Sonos Move is the best choice. Not only does it use Alexa, but it also uses Google voice commands.

But if you’re not worried about mobility and you care more about sound quality, then the HomePod is the best choice. The HomePod is far more superior when it comes to sound quality. It can also function as a HomeKit Hub. In terms of value, the Sonos Move is pricey as compared to the HomePod which is affordable. The HomePod offers better value for your money, but if you want a speaker that is water-resistant and that you can carry around, get the Sonos Move instead.
