Design

The SodaStream Fizzi and One Touch have nearly identical designs.

There’s only a minute size difference between the SodaStream Fizzi (left) and One Touch (right).

A quick look at these SodaStream soda machines can make you think they’re the same, since they’re almost identical in size, shape and form. SodaStream really wanted to keep the signature look of their classic model, the SodaStream Fizzi, when they made an electric version. The easiest way to tell them apart is the helpful electricity icon on the SodaStream One Touch right in front. The only other difference is that the Fizzi has a single button on top while the One Touch has three.

Both sparkling water makers are designed to work in the same way: they inject carbon dioxide (CO2) into water to make sparkling or fizzy water. SodaStream includes CO2 cylinders that are inserted inside the machines, which is currently the most effective method of carbonating water. Each cylinder can carbonate up to 60 liters of water, which can roughly equate to 60 plastic bottles you’re not buying.

With their very slim designs, it’s easy to find countertop space for either SodaStream Fizzi or One Touch. They’re quite tall and aren’t lightweight enough to be portable, and neither is dishwasher-safe. You can choose from black or white models for the One Touch, and up to 7 color choices for the Fizzi, to match it better with your other kitchen equipment and dΓ©cor.

Features

The SodaStream One Touch has fizz selection while the SodaStream Fizzi only has manual control.

The SodaStream Fizzi only has a single button for manual fizzing.

The most important difference between the SodaStream Fizzi and One Touch is their manual and electric operation. The single big button on the top of the Fizzi manually carbonates in short bursts, so you control how much fizz your drink has by pressing up to three times. You’ll press down in two-second increments or less to avoid spilling water over the top of the bottle. Popping in the BPA-free bottle is easy and painless, and the bottle has a tab that gently releases pressure to prevent fizzing over.

The SodaStream One Touch, ironically, has three buttons.

With electric power and three fizz selection settings, the SodaStream lets you choose carbonation levels automatically. The three top buttons indicates low, medium and high amounts of carbonation. Pressing any of them for a second time will add even more bubbles. Inserting the bottle and CO2 cylinder works exactly the same way as with the Fizzi, so you get a satisfying click when they lock into place.

Note that all SodaStream bottles have an expiration date, since older plastic bottles get weakened over time and run the small chance of exploding. Carbonating other liquids besides water might cause leaks or overflows and will also void the warranty. So if you want to add some flavor to your sparkling water, you can check out fruit drops from SodaStream to mix it with.

Performance

The SodaStream One Touch is more consistent than the SodaStream Fizzi.

The manual and automatic operation of the Fizzi (left) and One Touch (right) makes a big difference.

In general, the sparkling water you get from the SodaStream Fizzi and One Touch is nearly indistinguishable; they both make delicious and rejuvenating bubbly drinks. Compared to other soda machines, these SodaStream models produce highly fizzy water with a zippy mouthfeel thanks to a nice mix of small and larger bubbles.

However, the ability to select fizz levels automatically gives the SodaStream One Touch a significant advantage over the Fizzi. You’ll get consistent results again and again since the One Touch will carbonate exactly the same amount every time. In comparison, you have to get the hang of timing the manual presses on the SodaStream Fizzi. Spillovers are likelier, or you might wonder whether you’ve fizzed enough.

The SodaStream Fizzi does have the nice benefit of needing no power to run, so you can place it anywhere in the kitchen or house. It sounds a bit louder than the One Touch, which has a gushing sound while it’s working. You’ll need a power outlet close by for the SodaStream One Touch, so it competes with other appliances. Both come with 2 year warranties so they have sufficient coverage compared to most other kitchen equipment which only have 1 year warranties.

Verdict

The SodaStream One Touch is better than the SodaStream Fizzi.

The consistent and automatic fizzing of the SodaStream One Touch makes it easily the superior sparkling water maker. You won’t have to second-guess your presses like you would on the classic Fizzi, and you can enjoy your fizzy drinks carbonated according to your exact preferences every time. It costs quite a bit more than the SodaStream Fizzi, though, so if your budget is tight, it’s a great alternative and highly recommended instead of other non-SodaStream soda makers.
