Both earbuds protrude from the ears but they are still quite comfortable to wear.

The Sony WF-1000XM3 (right) has an oval shaped body while the Sennheiser Momentum 2 (left) features a round shaped frame.

Sony’s WF-1000XM3 features an oval shaped design that is very similar to the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds. It’s oval shape can either be a plus or a negative depending on the user. However, even though it is quite large, it is still comfortable to wear. Also, it’s large body actually makes it easier for its touch control due to a larger surface area.

As for the Sennheiser Momentum 2, it features the same round shaped body that the first generation Sennheiser Momentum had. Same as the Sony WF-1000XM3, it is comfortable to wear even for long periods.

The charging case for both earbuds are on the small side so they are easy to put in your pocket. That said, Sony’s charging case is a bit smaller. Both use USB-C, thankfully.

One thing that the Sennheiser Momentum 2 has over the Sony WF-1000XM3 is its IPX4 rating. An IPX4 rating means it is water and sweat resistant.

Sound Quality and Active Noise Cancellation

Audio quality is better on the Sennheiser Momentum 2 earbuds.

A look at the white Sennheisser Momentum True Wireless 2 (left) and the silver Sony WF-1000XM3 (right).

As Sennheiser is a company that is primarily focused on audio products, it’s no surprise that the sound quality on the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is better than the Sony WF-1000XM3. Having said that, the Sony earbuds are not terrible, it’s just that Sennheiser’s earbuds are significantly better.

The bass on the Sennheiser Momentum 2 is powerful, but not to the point that it is overwhelming. Mids are not muddled and highs are clear, without being harsh. Sony headphones tend to have slightly overpowering bass with the mids pushed to the back and the highs slightly pronounced, the typical V-shaped sound signature.

Another advantage to the Sennheiser Momentum 2 is its support for aptX, in addition to SBC and AAC. This can be a major factor for people that want to listen to high quality music wirelessly. In contrast, Sony’s WF-1000XM3 only support SBC and AAC.

As for active noise cancellation, it’s a toss-up as both perform very well. Both earbuds’ ANC can be turned off, if you want to save battery life. Additionally, both earbuds also feature a transparency mode so that you can hear your surroundings better, if you need to.

Battery Life and Other Features

Sony’s WF-1000XM3 has the better/longer battery life.

When it comes to runtime, the Sony WF-1000XM3 edges out the Sennheiser Momentum by a slight margin. The WF-1000XM3 can last up to 6 hours with ANC turned on while the Sennheiser’s claimed runtime of 7 hours is actually with ANC turned off. Once ANC is on, the Momentum 2 can last around 5-5.5 hours, which is a bit worse than the WF-1000XM3.

Same with the charging case, the additional 21 hours that you get with the Momentum 2 is with ANC off, while the extra 18 hours for the WF-1000XM3 is with ANC on. Needless to say, the extra battery life that you get with the Momentum 2 charging case will go down if the earbuds are used with ANC turned on.

Other features worth mentioning are Sony’s better voice control support and Sennheiser’s more comprehensive mobile app. Sony’s WF-1000XM3 works with Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant while Sennheiser only supports Siri and Google Assistant.

As for their mobile companion apps, Sony’s Headphones Connect app and Sennheiser’s Smart Control app are both easy to use. You can turn on ANC, transparency mode and personalize and adjust how your earbuds sound. However, Sennheiser’s Smart Control app is better due to its more intuitive equalizer.

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is the overall better earbuds, but it comes with a price premium.

If you want the better pair of earbuds, you should definitely go with the Sennheiser Momentum 2 as it has better sound quality, features, design and it is on par with the WF-1000XM3’s ANC. However, it is more expensive.

If budget is a concern, the Sony WF-1000XM3, with its more affordable price, is the better option. You will still get a very good pair of earbuds that come with top of the line active noise cancelling with Sony’s earbuds.
