The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is bigger and lighter than the iPhone Xs Max
Both the Galaxy S20 Plus and the iPhone Xs Max sport sleek, minimalist aesthetics, and both come with an all-screen design. While the older Samsung Galaxy models have their rear cameras placed horizontally at the center, the upcoming Galaxy S20 Plus’s camera placement will be similar to the iPhone Xs Max’s.
The new Galaxy smartphone will sport a bigger 6.7-inch screen size compared to the iPhone Xs Max’s 6.5-inch display. At 162mm, the S20+ will be slightly longer than the 157.5 mm iPhone Xs Max, but the 77.4 mm Xs Max is slightly wider than the 74mm Galaxy S20 Plus. Both smartphones have gotten rid of the traditional headphone jack.
Leaked information on the S20+ reveals that it will come in three colors: Cosmic Black, Cloud Blue, and Cosmic Gray. Meanwhile, the iPhone Xs Max offers shinier variants like Gold, Silver and Space Gray, with a glass front and back that enables wireless charging.
The Samsung Galaxy S20+ has better resolution and pixel density than the Apple iPhone Xs Max
Apart from its bigger screen display, the bezel-less Samsung Galaxy S20+ boasts Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED Display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Many high-end TV screens offer a refresh rate of 120 Hz, so the new Galaxy S20 Plus is expected to cost a pretty penny as well.
The iPhone Xs Max comes with a custom-built Super Retina display with OLED with only a 60 Hz refresh rate. With a pixel density of 525 pixels per inch, the Galaxy S20 Plus will have a higher resolution than the iPhone Xs Max which features 458 pixels per inch. With that said, the iPhone Xs Max still delivers stunning quality and works great with watching videos and using graphics-intensive apps.
The yet-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus will be more powerful than the iPhone Xs Max
Rumored to run on Snapdragon 865, the upcoming Galaxy S20+ will be significantly more powerful than the iPhone Xs Max that runs on Apple’s A12 Bionic chip. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 is expected to run up to 25% faster than the previous Snapdragon 855 which runs the Galaxy S10. With 12GB RAM, the upcoming Galaxy S20 Plus will be significantly faster than the 4 GB RAM of the iPhone Xs Max.
Benchmark scores using a reference device also reveal the possibility that the new Galaxy S20 smartphones might be as fast as the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max which run on Apple’s A13 Bionic processor. However, we cannot confirm this until Samsung releases the Galaxy S20 in their Unpacked event.
Both the Galaxy S20+ and the iPhone Xs Max are great smartphones for AR and graphics-intensive apps, but the new processor of the S20+will support 5G connectivity. Even the latest iPhone 11 series are not equipped with 5G capabilities.
The Samsung Galaxy S20+ will have four rear cameras while the iPhone Xs Max only has two.
Samsung’s upcoming S20 Plus boasts four high-resolution rear cameras: 12MP wide, 64MP telephoto, 12MP ultra-wide and a Time of Flight (ToF) camera. This is a significant difference from the iPhone Xs Max’s dual 12MP wide and telephoto rear cameras. The soon-to-be-unveiled Galaxy S20+ is also capable of recording 8K videos and up to 30x digital zoom (three times more than the iPhone’s 10x digital zoom).
For the bokeh-loving smartphone users, both cameras work well for taking images with depth and blurred backgrounds. While the Samsung sounds great on paper, we have yet to see how these specs translate to real photos and videos in the actual Galaxy S20+.
Selfie lovers will enjoy the ultra high definition photos and videos of the 10MP front camera of the Galaxy S20 Plus. While the upcoming smartphone will have a higher resolution front camera, the iPhone Xs Max still does a great job of capturing high-quality 7MP photos and 1080p HD videos. We also love the Xs Max’s cinematic video stabilization for those times we’re moving and walking while recording videos. The Galaxy Note10, the predecessor of the S20 series, is equipped with stabilizers as well, so we can expect the same from the new flagship smartphones from Samsung.
Battery and Additional Features
The Galaxy S20+ will have a longer battery life than the iPhone Xs Max, but both are water-resistant and battery-efficient.
With a 4500mAh battery and the efficient Snapdragon processor, the upcoming S20 Plus is expected to have long battery life. When the iPhone Xs Max was released in 2018, it had one of the biggest batteries on a smartphone with a life of up to 10 hours from its 3174 mAh battery. As for the Samsung S20+, we can only confirm the actual hours of usage once the smartphones are officially released.
Both the Galaxy S20 Plus and the iPhone Xs Max have an IP68 rating. This means these smartphones are dustproof and can withstand splashes, rain, and submersion for up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. Apple tested the iPhone Xs Max with spills from water and other liquids such as tea, soda, and coffee.
The upcoming Samsung flagship phone is expected to have internal storage of up to 256GB, with support for up to 1TB external storage through a microSD slot. Meanwhile, the iPhone Xs Max is available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB storage capacity without the option for external storage.
The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is the more powerful smartphone, but the iPhone Xs Max is still a solid smartphone with a lower price tag

Although the official price of the Galaxy S20+ has not yet been released, this Samsung handset will likely set you back a grand. All the top-notch features that we know so far about the S20+ make it worth the high price tag that comes with them. While the S20+ on the horizon might just up the ante for premium smartphones, the Apple iPhone Xs Max is still a great purchase for loyal Apple users who are more comfortable with the Cupertino-based tech giant’s ecosystem.
