Ryobi vs Honda Generator (2020): Choosing A Portable Inverter Generator

Backup power is an often forgotten utility that most homes only realize they need once a crisis arises. With highly portable inverter generators offered by Ryobi and Honda, no household should really be without one, since they’re relatively affordable for the convenience of keeping the lights up when the power’s out. Here’s a look at two popular choices for lightweight inverters, the Ryobi RYI2200GR and the Honda EU2200i.

Engine and Power

The Honda EU2200i provides DC output and has a higher rated AC output than the Ryobi RYI2200GR.

Powering the Honda EU2200i inverter generator is a more powerful 121cc Honda GXR120 engine compared to the 80cc OHV of the Ryobi RYI2200GR. So while both have the same starting wattage of 2200 W, the Honda inverter has a higher running wattage of 1800 W against the 1700 W of the Ryobi. That extra power can come in handy to turn on a couple of extra light bulbs or appliance, and is a lot more appreciated in camping activities and worksites.

Both of these portable generators have two 120V AC receptacles to plug into. However, the Honda EU2200i includes a 12V DC output for automotive batteries, a useful addition if you plan on bringing it on outdoor excursions. As they’re inverter generators, you can rely on them to provide stable power to electronics.

Fuel consumption is actually similar for these Ryobi and Honda models. The Honda EU2200i has a slightly smaller 0.95 gallon fuel tank that lets it run for 8 hours on 1/4 load. Meanwhile, the Ryobi RYI2200GR empties its 1.26 gallon tank after 10.3 hours on the same load. This places fuel use at roughly at 0.12 gallons per hour.

Convenience

The Honda EU2200i is quieter and easier to start but the Ryobi RYI2200GR is more portable.

Ryobi vs Honda Generator Convenience
You’ll find the Honda EU3000iS inverter generator to be pleasantly quiet compared to other portables.

Ryobi made sure that the RYI2200GR is as easy to move about as it could be, adding handles at the top and both ends of its frame. Moreover, this Ryobi inverter has two wheels that can be used in conjunction with the extendable handle that’s tucked at its bottom. Pulling it out lets you tow the Ryobi RYI2200GR instead of hefting it around. Meanwhile, the Honda EU2200i only has a single handle, but it’s lighter so it remains fairly easy to carry.

Honda has done an amazing job with its engine and starting system. You can reliably start the Honda EU2200i on the first few pulls on its recoil starter, even after its tank has been drained and weeks in between uses. It doesn’t require too much effort to get going too, so you won’t risk straining muscles. In comparison, the Ryobi RYI2200GR can require more than a handful of pulls before it gets going, so be prepared to flex your back a bit.

Once running, the Honda EU2200i generator is significantly quieter than the Ryobi RYI2200GR. At 25% load, the Honda inverter hums at 48 decibels while the Ryobi drones at 57 dB. Cranking up usage to 100% load increases noise levels to 57 dB and 67.9 dB, respectively. This means you’ll want to position the Ryobi inverter a bit farther to diffuse its sound output more.

Features

Both Ryobi RYI2200GR and Honda EU2200i generators have parallel capability and low oil shutoff.

Ryobi vs Honda Generator Features
You can essentially upgrade a Honda EU2200i with another to get more power for your home.

One of the best things about these Ryobi and Honda inverter models is that they can be “upgraded” in the future in case you need more power but want to keep their portability. With parallel capabilities, you can pair two generators of a similar model to essentially double their output and get more power to run electrical appliances. Both the Ryobi RYI2200GR and Honda EU2200i support parallel connections via optional cables. You can check their website or operating manual to see other models that can also work with these two.

As standard safety features, both inverters are equipped with spark arrestors and electronic circuit breakers to prevent fires and protect against overloading. They also have low oil detection systems that automatically shut down their engines in case they lack the necessary amount to run safely.

Verdict

The Honda EU2200i is worth its extra cost over the Ryobi RYI2200GR.

We’re recommending the Honda EU2200i in this portable inverter generator comparison because of its dependable power and reduced noise levels. You’ll be able to start it more easily and quickly, which is crucial in our opinion. Moreover, you’ll find that it can run power-hungry equipment more reliably, while its stable current lets you use electronics without worry. Its super quiet operation also makes it easier on the ears of both your family and your neighbors’.

If you’re on a lower budget, the Ryobi RYI2200GR will easily meet your power requirements without straining your funds. You’ll save a lot and get similar power outputs, though note that you might struggle getting it started in the future. It has a slightly larger fuel tank that results in longer run times, letting you enjoy powered appliances before refilling. Plus, lugging it around should be hassle-free with its extendable handle and wheels.
