Design

The Razer Kraken Ultimate is a wired gaming headset while the Razer Nari Ultimate has a wired and wireless mode.

The most noticeable difference between the Razer Kraken Ultimate (left) and Razer Nari Ultimate (right) are their headband designs.

Design-wise, both gaming headsets definitely have that “gamer aesthetic.” In fact, that is actually one of their main selling points since they both feature Chroma RGB lighting (more on that later). Both gaming headsets come with a metal frame but majority of the parts are made of plastic.

The Razer Kraken Ultimate is a solidly built gaming headset and there are no potential weak points in its construction. On the other hand, the Razer Nari Ultimate’s earcups can swivel and the point that connects the earcups to the headband can be a potential weak point. That said, it still feels sturdy and as long as you use it and store it with care, you won’t encounter any issues.

As far as connectivity goes, the Razer Kraken Ultimate is a strictly wired gaming headset that comes with a braided USB cable. In contrast, the Razer Nari Ultimate can be used either wired or wirelessly. It comes with a USB wireless receiver and a 3.5mm audio cable. Needless to say, the Razer Nari Ultimate is compatible with more devices.

They both have a retractable microphone on the left earcup. On the Razer Kraken Ultimate, the microphone comes with active noise cancelling so that your voice can be heard without the ambient noise and the mute button is placed directly on the mic itself. The retractable mic on the Razer Nari Ultimate, in comparison, does not have active noise cancelling.

Comfort

Even though they are big and bulky, they are still lightweight and comfortable for long gaming sessions.

They both have retractable microphones.

Both the Razer Kraken Ultimate and Nari Ultimate are suitable for long gaming sessions since they are not that heavy and they don’t trap heat as much as other closed-back headphones. They both come with cooling-gel cushions covered by leatherette and this is much more effective than regular foam when it comes to heat dispersal.

The earcups are big enough to cover your ears so you won’t feel discomfort even after a few hours of gaming. In addition, the headbands also come with thick cushions. The Razer Kraken has a more relaxed clamping force than the Razer Nari Ultimate, but the difference is not that significant. Both gaming headsets do not clamp down on your head to the point that it feels uncomfortable. Overall, they are both great for long gaming sessions.

Features

The Razer Nari Ultimate comes with more features than the Razer Kraken Ultimate.

Both gaming headsets come with THX Spatial Audio for surround sound.

Both gaming headsets feature THX Spatial Audio for surround sound gaming. This allows you to pinpoint directional audio sources so that you can react quickly. Needless to say, this gives you an advantage over other players in multiplayer games since you’ll have an idea of where they are by the sound of their footsteps or their guns. In single player games, this feature gives you a more immersive experience.

Another feature that they both share is Chroma RGB support. You can choose from different lighting patterns using the Razer Synapse software. If you have other Razer gaming peripherals, you can sync them easily for a nice lighting setup while gaming.

One feature that is only available on the Razer Nari Ultimate is HyperSense. With this feature, the headset will take various audio cues and convert them to touch-sensory feedback that provides great immersion. The vibrations on the headset flows from left to right and vice versa, and will have various levels of intensity depending on the sound signals that it receives and what’s happening on the screen.

Since the Razer Kraken Ultimate only has a wired USB connection, the devices that you can use it with are the following: PC, Playstation consoles and the Nintendo Switch in docked mode. In contrast, the Razer Nari Ultimate is compatible with almost all gaming devices since it has a 3.5mm wired connection option in addition to its wireless USB connectivity.

Sound

Both will sound good when gaming but the Razer Nari Ultimate’s HyperSense feature gives it an advantage.

For gaming, they both perform well due to the THX Spatial Audio feature. Surround sound gaming, while not perfect, is very enjoyable and immersive with both headsets. That said, the HyperSense feature that comes with Razer Nari Ultimate gives it a bit of an advantage since it can provide a more immersive experience than the Kraken Ultimate.

When it comes to sound quality, they are a bit similar. Both gaming headsets have an over-emphasized low-end that sounds boomy and punchy. For action games and movies, this can be enjoyable. However, for listening to music or any audio that requires accurate bass, these headsets won’t sound as good as other headphones that have a tighter and more accurate low frequency response. For hip-hop and EDM though, these headsets are fine.

As for the mids, they are quite accurate. For instance, dialogue in games and movies can be clearly heard. Vocals in music sound good as well. When it comes to the highs, they are a bit recessed, so high frequency sounds in music are not that clear.

Verdict

Both are great for gaming but the Razer Nari Ultimate wins this bout due to its HyperSense feature and better compatibility with most gaming devices.

The Razer Nari Ultimate is the better gaming headset since it offers a few features that can’t be found on the Razer Kraken Ultimate. With its HyperSense haptic feedback, it can give you a more immersive and enjoyable gaming experience. In addition, it is also compatible with more gaming platforms since it has a wired 3.5mm audio cable that works with anything that has this port. Even though it is more expensive, we still recommend the Razer Nari Ultimate over the Razer Kraken Ultimate.
