Razer Huntsman Mini vs Tournament Edition (2021): Compact Gaming Keyboard Comparison

Razer’s Huntsman keyboards with opto-mechanical keys are some of the best for gaming. Instead of having mechanical keys, these keyboards come with optical switches that can actuate faster. The Razer Huntsman Mini and the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition are two of the more compact keyboards in the lineup. While they share some features, such as their excellent portability, doubleshot PBT keycaps and RGB support, the two still offer a very different gaming experience due to their size and key switches. Below is our comparison of the two to help you decide which one is better for your particular needs.

Design

Both the Razer Huntsman Mini and Tournament Edition are well-built and they have individually lit keys for various lighting patterns.

The Razer Huntsman Mini (left) is more compact than the tenkeyless Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition (right).

One of the major differences between the two is their size. The Razer Huntsman Mini, as its name implies, is a mini keyboard that is about 60% the size of a full-size keyboard. It doesn’t have a function row, dedicated arrow keys or a numpad. Needless to say, this keyboard is compact and takes up less space on your desk than standard keyboards.

On the other hand, the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition is a tenkeyless keyboard, which means that it doesn’t have a numpad, but it still has function keys and dedicated arrow keys. It’s about three inches wider than the Razer Huntsman Mini, so it will take up more space on your desk.

Aside from their form factor and the number of their keys, the two have similar build qualities. Both keyboards have a plastic frame but underneath, there’s an aluminum plate that contributes to their durability and prevents them from having too much flex. They also have similar doubleshot PBT keys that are slightly textured and feel nice to type on. Another similarity that they share is their detachable USB-C cable. They use non-proprietary ones, so you can use any USB-C to USB-A cable in case you misplace it or if they get damaged.

If you like RGB, then you’ll be pleased with these two keyboards since they have individually-lit keys. Powered by Razer Chroma RGB, these keyboards offer endless lighting patterns and customizations. You can also sync them with other compatible Razer peripherals.

Features

Features-wise, the only difference between the two are the switches that they come with.

razer huntsman mini vs tournament edition features
The Razer Huntsman Mini comes with either clicky or linear optical switches, while the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition only comes with linear optical switches.

Aside from their form factor, another major difference between the two is their switch type. The Razer Huntsman Mini can be equipped with either purple clicky or red linear optical switches, while the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition can only come with red linear optical switches.

Purple clicky switches have low pre-travel and they give the user a tactile feedback to let them know that a keystroke is registered. They are also very responsive and require little force to actuate. Red linear optical switches are also responsive and great for gaming. These switches require even less force to actuate and have a shorter pre-travel, so keystrokes are registered fast. One notable difference between the two is that red linear optical switches do not provide a tactile feedback, so it’s less noisy.

Both keyboards come with the Razer Synapse app that lets you tinker with various settings for the keyboards. You can remap buttons, set up macros, play with the RGB lighting and more. The two keyboards come with onboard memory that can store up to five profiles. Although the Razer Synapse software is good, it still has its issues. One in particular is that it’s not available for MacOS. If you are an Apple user, some features of the keyboards will not be available to you.

Performance

The Razer Huntsman Mini is better for gaming but the Huntsman Tournament Edition is better for general usage.

Both keyboards are equipped with doubleshot PBT keycaps and they also have detachable non-proprietary USB-C cables.

For gaming, the Razer Huntsman Mini with clicky optical switches is better than the Huntsman Tournament Edition with linear optical switches. Although the linear switches actuate faster, the tactile feedback of the clicky switches is more satisfying and it lets you know when a key is pressed and registered. Another advantage of the Huntsman Mini is its compact build. If you are using a low dpi mouse or if you have a smaller desk, the extra room for your mouse means that you won’t bump into your keyboard needlessly.

When it comes to general usage, the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition is better since it has more keys. Having function keys and dedicated arrow keys is very useful, especially for touch typists. These keys let you have a more streamlined typing exprience. Also, its linear optical switches produce less noise than the clicky optical switches of the Razer Huntsman Mini. You can use the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition in an office setting without annoying your co-workers.

Verdict

The Razer Huntsman Mini offers better portability and it is excellent if your PC is only for gaming. However, if you also use your PC for work, the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition is a much better choice.

If your purpose for buying a keyboard is to use it solely for gaming, the Razer Huntsman Mini is the clear winner. It offers better gaming performance due to its fast clicky optical switches and its more compact design. It’s also much cheaper. However, if you will also be using the keyboard for non-gaming related tasks, you’re better off with the Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition. It comes with extra keys that can make your workflow much better and your typing experience more streamlined.
