Design

Sporting ultra-soft memory foam ear cushions, the Razer BlackShark V2 and V2 Pro are comfortable for marathon gaming sessions.

The Razer BlackShark V2 (left) and V2 Pro (right) have a similar design.

The two headsets are similar when it comes to their design. They both have oval-shaped earcups with memory foam padding, a detachable boom mic and control buttons on the left earcup. Aside from the fixed cable on the Razer BlackShark V2, these two are identical.

As mentioned, they have soft memory foam on the earcups and since they are lightweight as well, they are comfortable during longer gaming sessions. However, these two are closed-back headphones so they may trap heat and cause sweating, but this is only an issue if you are in a warm environment.

They have a decent build quality and they should last long provided that you don’t treat them harshly. The hinges that connect the earcups to the headbands are the only cause for concern regarding their build quality. While they are made of metal, they are quite thin. Other than that, the headphones are sturdy. The plastic used in their construction is dense and they feel solid.

Features

The Razer BlackShark V2 has a cardioid mic while the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro comes with a supercardioid microphone.

These two are gaming headsets optimized for PC use since you’ll need to download their software in order to enable most of their features. Downloading the Razer Synapse software allows you to enable their THX Spatial Audio feature, tweak their 10-band EQ and enable various settings such as voice clarity, bass boost and more. Furthermore, the software allows you to enhance the sound of their removable boom mics by adjusting the ambient noise reduction, volume normalization and more.

The main feature of the two headphones is their THX Spatial Audio virtual surround sound. With this feature, the headphones will give you directional audio quite accurately for immersion and a competitive edge when playing online. The Razer Synapse software allows you to tweak the surround effect to your liking by giving you the option to move the virtual speakers. There are many options for customization, but of course, you can always turn it off if you prefer to play in stereo mode.

Performance

Even though they have the same drivers, the Razer BlackShark V2 sounds a bit better than the BlackShark V2 Pro.

razer blackshark v2 vs v2 pro performance
Both the Razer BlackShark V2 (left) and V2 Pro (right) come with THX spatial audio.

The Razer BlackShark V2 and V2 Pro both sound good during games. When their THX Spatial Audio is enabled, you can tell which direction sounds come from. This is especially helpful during competitive games since you’ll be able to discern footsteps and the sound of gunfire. For single player games, you’ll be immersed since they offer accurate directional audio. Of course, audio is not the best when virtual surround sound is enabled. You should expect a drop in audio quality, but not too much that it becomes a hindrance to your enjoyment of the game.

When it comes to listening to music, you should turn off the virtual surround sound and only listen in stereo mode since it offers better audio quality. That said, the two headphones have a fairly neutral sound but the Razer BlackShark V2 sounds better overall.

The Razer BlackShark V2 has a neutral sound with a slightly emphasized bass and treble. The mids are accurate and they are not pushed back. Its low frequency response is a bit emphasized but not enough that it is overpowering. The highs are slightly emphasized so there may be some harshness and sibilance, but only if you are listening to badly mixed music.

On the other hand, the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro has a more boomy and overemphasized bass response that can be too overwhelming. Bassheads will prefer this sound but for most people, the V2 Pro’s bass can be too much. The mids and the treble range are similar to the V2.

Connectivity and Other Features

The Razer BlackShark V2 is a wired-only headset while the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro has wireless and wired connectivity.

Here’s what’s included with the Razer BlackShark V2 (left) and V2 Pro (right).

The Razer BlackShark V2 is a wired only headset. On PC, you can use it with either its 3.5mm jack or with its USB soundcard. To enable all of its features, you’ll need to connect it to your PC using the USB soundcard. Since it has a 3.5mm connection, it is compatible with any console or gaming platform that has a 3.5mm jack. However, its virtual surround sound feature won’t be available.

In contrast, the Razer BlackShark V2 has a wired and wireless connectivity option. It can be used wirelessly on PC, Mac and Playstation consoles. When used on Playstation consoles, its virtual surround sound feature is not available. It also comes with a 3.5mm cable so it is compatible with any device that has a 3.5mm jack.

As far as battery life goes, the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro can last up to 24 hours on a single charge.

Verdict

The wired Razer BlackShark V2 offers better value for the money, but the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is still a worthwhile purchase if your prefer a wireless gaming headset.

Both headphones are great and they are worth purchasing if you want immersive audio when gaming. The Razer BlackShark V2 is cheaper and if you don’t mind a wired-only connection, this is the gaming headset to get. However, if you want the convenience of wireless gaming, you should definitely buy the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro. They have the same set of features and they sound similar. Choosing between the two will come down to your preference when it comes to connectivity.
