Even though the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro and the SteelSeries Arctis 7 are marketed as gaming headsets, they don’t have any of the exaggerated design that most gaming headsets have. They both have a minimalist and modern look that can pass as regular headphones. While they both have similar oval-shaped earcups, they differ when it comes to their headbands. The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro sports a pretty standard headband while the SteelSeries Arctis 7 comes with SteelSeries’ ski-band style strap.

In terms of comfort, both have sufficient padding on their ear cups. However, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 is a bit more comfortable since your head won’t touch the headband and as a result, you won’t feel pressure on top of your head. The two have a relaxed clamping force and they won’t cause discomfort or fatigue during long gaming sessions.

As for build quality, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 once again has the advantage since it is better built than the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro. The SteelSeries Arctis 7 feels more solid due to its metal frame and headband. The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro has an alright build quality, but as mentioned in our Razer BlackShark V2 Pro vs Nari Ultimate comparison, the weak points of the headset are its hinges that are made of thin metal and plastic.

The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro comes in black only, while the SteelSeries Arctis 7 has white and black color options available.

Features

The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro comes with THX Spatial Audio while the SteelSeries Arctis 7’s virtual surround sound is powered by DTS Headphone:X 2.0

The mic of the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro (left) is removable while the SteelSeries Arctis 7 (right) has a retractable mic design.

Both headsets are very easy to use. On the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro, all the controls are on the left ear cup. It has a volume dial, a power button and mic mute button. The controls on the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is simplified and very intuitive. On the other hand, the SteelSeries Arctis 7’s controls can be found on both ear cups. On the left ear cup is a mixing wheel and its power button, while the right ear cup houses the volume wheel and its mic mute button.

The main selling points of these headsets is their virtual surround sound. However, this feature is only available on PC since you’ll need to download their respective software in order to enable it. For the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro, you’ll have to download the Razer Synapse 3 software and for the SteelSeries Arctis 7, the software that you need is the SteelSeries Engine 3.

When it comes to ease of use, the Razer Synapse and the SteelSeries Engine are great. They have a user-friendly UI and everything is accessible with just a few clicks. Also, everything is labelled properly so you’ll know what each setting will do. You are given many options when it comes to custom EQ settings, EQ presets and more.

Sound

The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro sounds slightly better than the SteelSeries Arctis 7, but the difference is negligible.

Both the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro (left) and SteelSeries Arctis 7 (right) have oval-shaped ear cups.

The two gaming headsets have a sound that emphasizes the bass and treble over the mids. Both headsets are suitable for music that are bass-centric, such as hip-hop and EDM.

The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro’s bass is boosted but it’s not overpowering, while its mids are a bit forward, so vocals and dialogue, when watching movies, can be heard clearly. The treble range is also boosted, which means that you can clearly hear the details when listening to music. However, a downside to this is that some recordings can sound harsh, especially those that feature high-pitched female vocals.

The SteelSeries Arctis 7, on the other hand, has a V-shaped sound that emphasizes the bass and treble over the mids. Just like the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro, its bass is boosted but it’s not overwhelming. The mids are slightly recessed, but the treble range is emphasized so you’ll clearly hear the details when listening to music. Since the treble range is a bit boosted, there can be sibilance and harshness when listening to music that are badly mixed or those that feature high pitched vocals.

When it comes to gaming, the two perform similarly. Since they offer virtual surround sound, you can tell which direction a particular sound is coming from. Needless to say, this gives you a whole new level of immersion when playing by yourself and a competitive edge when playing multiplayer games.

Battery and Compatibility

The two gaming headsets can last up to 24 hours on a single charge.

As for compatibility, you can use both headsets with pretty much any gaming platform since they offer wired and wireless connectivity. However, their virtual surround sound feature is only available on the PC since you’ll need their software to enable it.

You can use the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro and the SteelSeries Arctis 7 wirelessly via USB on PC, Mac, PS4, PS5 and the Switch in handheld mode. To use them on Xbox consoles, mobile and the Switch in docked mode, a wired 3.5mm connection is required.

Verdict

The two offer similar features and battery life, but the SteelSeries Arctis 7 is cheaper and it is better built.

If you are choosing between the two, the SteelSeries Arctis 7 offers better value for money since it is a bit cheaper while having a more solid build quality. Features-wise, the two are similar. When it comes to sound quality, the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is a bit better, but in all honesty, the difference is pretty small and there are some that will prefer the V-shaped sound of the SteelSeries Arctis 7 more.
