When it comes to electric toothbrushes, Oral-B is arguably top-of-mind. The brand’s oral hygiene gadgets not only boast impressive cleaning abilities but are packed with smart features as well. In its own catalog, the Oral-B iO and GENIUS series clearly occupy the premium tier.
The Oral-B iO Series 9, however, is the most expensive on the list, thanks to its multiple cleaning modes, AI features, and interactive color display. The Oral-B GENIUS X, on the other hand, sports many of the advanced cleaning features of the iO Series 9 but loses the screen to make it a slightly less expensive alternative. Is the display the only difference between the two brushes? Keep reading the review below to find out.

The Oral-B iO Series 9 looks more premium than the Oral-B GENIUS X electric toothbrush.
Oral-B is known for making some of the best electric toothbrushes, and it’s apparent in the design of the Oral-B iO Series 9 and GENIUS X. These devices are sleek and sophisticated, boasting a sturdy build and an ergonomic form. Although primarily made from plastic, the smooth lines of the iO and GENIUS’s handles lend them a more minimalist aesthetic.
The iO Series 9, however, looks more premium. Its interactive color display, for instance, is discreetly integrated into its handle. When this screen is turned off, the iO Series 9 has a more unibody appearance, too. The physical buttons are arranged in a raised oval panel. Since it doesn’t come with a display, you have cleaning mode icons dotting the length of its handle instead.
What the GENIUS X loses in aesthetic, however, it makes up for with a practical feature. Oral-B has wrapped the back of the toothbrush’s handle with a rubber material for extra grip. The iO Series 9, on the other hand, is content with its matte finish for users to grasp. Of course, there are shared features as well. The Oral-B iO Series 9 and GENIUS X brushes are equipped with an LED pressure sensor. They also employ round brush heads and are available in different colors.
The Oral-B iO Series 9 and GENIUS X deliver comparable cleaning performance.
While these brushes look sophisticated, how good are they at actually cleaning your teeth? Well, it’s safe to say that Oral-B isn’t cutting corners with the two, given their premium price tag.
The Oral-B iO Series 9, for instance, boasts 7 smart brushing modes. These are Daily Clean, Whitening, Gum Care, Sensitive, Intense, Super Sensitive, and Tongue Clean. Oral-B’s GENIUS X, on the other hand, features 6 cleaning modes. Users can choose from Daily Clean, Pro-Clean, Whitening, Gum Care, Sensitive, and Tongue Clean before brushing.
Oral-B relies on what it calls 3D action for cleaning, which means the brush heads rotate and oscillate when cleaning one’s mouth. The additional cleaning motions of the two brushes, however, are slightly different. On the GENIUS X, you get a pulsating motion. The iO Series 9, on the other hand, employs micro-vibrations. Both pulsating motion and micro-vibration share the same purpose of breaking up plaque before the brush’s 3D action sweeps them away.
Is one cleaning motion more beneficial than the other? Not really. The difference in cleaning performance between the Oral-B iO Series 9 and GENIUS X is negligible. Where the new frictionless motor on the iO Series 9 has an edge, however, is a quieter cleaning performance compared to the rather buzzy GENIUS X.
Oral-B’s iOS Series 9 brush has a few more smart features over the GENIUS X.
Oral-B’s iO brushes are known for their interactive color display. This allows the brush to communicate with the user through emoji-style graphics. On the iO Series 9, this unique screen also displays cleaning mode and battery information. It visualizes the two-minute timer that’s standard in many of today’s electric toothbrushes, too. As mentioned in the design, the GENIUS X doesn’t have a screen, so all the information is relayed via icons instead.
Aside from the timer and pacer, the Oral-B iO Series 9 and GENIUS X come with LED pressure sensors, too. Both components light up red when too much pressure is applied while brushing. The iO Series 9, however, will also light up green if the correct pressure is used — a thoughtful and encouraging feature.
Like many of today’s smart devices, the iO Series 9 and GENIUS X can pair with your smartphone via Bluetooth. The brushes’ companion Oral-B app use AI technology to map the surface of your teeth using the sensors on the brush heads. This allows you to track in real-time how you brush and helps you gain insight into your brushing habits and behavior.
Battery and Accessories
The Oral-B iOS Series 9 and GENIUS X include travel charging cases, charging stands, and replacement brush heads.
The iO Series 9 and GENIUS X are rechargeable electric toothbrushes that use lithium-ion batteries. According to Oral-B, both devices deliver about two weeks of battery life. The iO Series 9, however, takes only 3-hours to be fully charged compared to the GENIUS X’s 12 hours. In addition, Oral-B’s iO brush uses a more sophisticated magnetic charger, while the GENIUS comes with the traditional inductive charging base.
True to its nature as smart gadgets, these advanced oral care devices work with a few accessories as well. Both the iO Series 9 and GENIUS X, for instance, come with travel charging cases. The iO’s Power2Go case, however, only charges the brush, while the GENIUS X’s features a USB port so you can also power up your smartphone.
If you opt for the Oral-V iO Series 9 pack, you typically get four Ultimate Clean replacement brush heads with it. The Oral-B GENIUS X, on the other hand, includes 3 replacement brush heads.
The Oral-B GENIUS X may not have an interactive display, but it delivers comparable features and the same cleaning performance as the more expensive Oral-B iO Series 9.
Users with deep pockets and who like top-of-the-line gadgets will definitely appreciate the Oral-B iO Series 9. Whoever imagined an interactive display on a toothbrush was possible in the first place? It’s not just a vain feature, too. The iO Series 9’s screen provides all the information you need about your brush and brushing habits.
Except for the display, however, the Oral-B GENIUS X delivers almost the same set of features. While its cleaning motion uses the more traditional pulsating motion, the performance you get is comparable with the iO Series 9. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a difference in how well these two clean. Unless you’re someone who cares about engaging with your brush through a display, then the GENIUS X is the better premium electric toothbrush to get.
The Oral-B iO electric toothbrushes feature an interactive display, while the GENIUS lineup makes use of more traditional LED icons on the handle.
The Oral-B iO Series 9 travel charging case can only hold one (1) replacement brush head.
Yes, users can customize the color of the LED ring on the Oral-B GENIUS X. This is carried out through the Oral-B app.
