Two of the biggest rivals in the oral hygiene market, Oral-B and Philips Sonicare, continue to manufacture reliable electric toothbrushes that have been welcomed in many households. Each has its own line of smart electric toothbrush models, the Oral-B Genius X and the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart, that can be connected to a companion app.
To keep it a level-playing field, we compare their popular models pegged at similar price points: the Oral-B Genius X 10000 and the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9300. In a nutshell, the Genius X offers more bells and whistles, but we prefer the Sonicare DiamondClean overall. Find out why below.

They have different cleaning motions, cleaning modes, and intensity levels
It’s safe to say that a major deciding factor when choosing between Oral-B and Sonicare is your preferred cleaning motion. Some studies show that the oscillating motion of the Oral-B Genius X does a better job at plaque removal, while some claim that the Sonicare cleans better because its vibrating motion produces more bubbles and water that goes in between the teeth. The consensus, however, is both do a significantly better job than a manual toothbrush.
Having said that, we prefer the Sonicare DiamondClean as its brush head has densely-packed bristles that feel gentler to the gums. Its different intensity levels help remove more plaque as well. In addition, using a Sonicare feels similar to using a manual toothbrush while the Genius’s oscillating-rotating cleaning motion requires a different technique that takes getting used to.
As the higher-end model, the Oral-B Genius X 10000 has more cleaning modes than the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart. The Genius X’s six cleaning modes are Daily Clean, Pro-Clean, Whitening, Gum Care, Sensitive, and Tongue Clean. Meanwhile, the DiamondClean 9300 only has four modes: Clean, White+, Deep Clean+, Gum Health. The higher-end DiamondClean 9500 and 9700 include an additional Tongue Care mode.
The Sonicare DiamondClean’s companion app feels slightly more inuitive than the Genius X’s
Like most smart appliances in your home, the Oral-B Genius X and Sonicare DiamondClean Smart have a companion app. They pair using Bluetooth, and setting them up is straightforward. Not a lot is different between their apps, either. They both monitor the pressure you’re applying in different areas, the coverage, and your brushing time. With these apps, you can set goals, get insights on your brushing habits, and make necessary changes to improve your oral health. You can also turn on notifications for brush replacement reminders through the app.
Perhaps the major difference in the app’s functionality is LED Smart Ring light (see bottom left photo above) configurations available on the Oral-B Genius X. You can choose the color of its Ring light from the 12 options available. This light turns red whenever you apply excessive pressure when brushing. The Sonicare DiamondClean also has a pressure indicator, but it’s not customizable like the Genius X.
The Sonicare DiamondClean Smart looks more sleek and comes in more color options
Design is probably not a major consideration when choosing a smart electric toothbrush, but it’s worth noting that the Sonicare DiamondClean 9300 looks and feels more premium than the Genius X. Its sleek handle and matte finish give it a more elegant feel. Both the Genius X and the Sonicare DiamondClean have a power button and another button for switching between cleaning modes.
It’s easier to identify the cleaning mode you’re on in the Sonicare as the indicator clearly shows the different modes. As for the Genius X, it displays six icons that correspond to each cleaning mode. Where the Genius X edges out the Sonicare DiamondClean is in its travel case (more on this in the next section) and pressure indicator’s placement in the handle. Because it’s in the middle, it can be seen more easily compared to the DiamondClean’s that’s located at the base of the handle.
Battery Life & Maintenance
The Genius X’s smart travel case doubles as a charger
In terms of battery life and charger, each brand has its unique features. For instance, the Oral-B Genius X uses its smart travel case for charging. This travel case also doubles as a portable charger as it lets you charge your mobile phone through its USB port. Perhaps our only gripe about the Genius X’s charging system is its case requires its proprietary charger to work. If you’re taking your Genius X with you during your long term travel, make sure you don’t leave the charger behind. We say long term because the battery life of the Genius X can last for up to 16 days.
What we love about the Sonicare DiamondClean’s charger is its glass charging dock. It looks just like any other glass that you can use to rinse your mouth, except it sits on top of an induction charging pad. Unlike the Genius X, however, the DiamondClean 9300’s travel case cannot be used as a charger. In addition, the 9300’s battery life is 14 days, two shorter than the Genius X’s. If you want more battery life, you can get the more expensive DiamondClean models.
Both smart electric toothbrushes come with brush head replacements out of the box. The Genius X has two extra brush heads while the Sonicare DiamondClean 9300 has three. You can tell when it’s time for a new brush head through their fading bristle indicators or the app.
Other Oral-B Genius X and Sonicare DiamondClean Models
There are more models available in the Genius and DiamondClean Smart line
Overall, the Oral-B Genius line is more affordable than the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart. They do have different models that suit different budgets, though.
Here’s a list of the other Oral-B Genius smart electric toothbrush models arranged by price:
- Genius 9600: more affordable; app interface is not as intuitive as the Genius X
- Genius X Limited: Only has one brush head; only comes with a standard travel case and charger
- Genius X Luxe Edition: Available in sakura pink and anthracite black; comes with more brush heads
As for the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart, here are other models in addition to the 9300:
- DiamondClean Smart 9100: has four cleaning modes; doesn’t come with an extra brush head
- DiamondClean Smart 9500: has five cleaning modes; comes with 3 extra brush heads
- DiamondClean Smart 9700: has five cleaning modes; comes with 7 extra brush heads; color options look more premium
The Sonicare DiamondClean Smart has a more seamless app interface and a more sleek and stylish design that justifies its higher price tag
One is not exactly better than the other, but we’ll have to go with the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9300 in this comparison. It simply feels easier to use and–from the cleaning mode indicators to the charging glass–everything about its design is well thought out. You’ll also have more intensity settings to choose from and the Sonicare app is slightly more intuitive, too.
Having said that, we’re not discounting the Oral-B Genius X altogether. It has more cleaning modes, longer battery life, and its pressure indicator is easier to see while brushing your teeth. If you want to save a little, the Genius X is an excellent alternative to the DiamondClean Smart.
There’s no straightforward answer to this as they have a wide range of electric toothbrush models. Generally, Oral-B’s electric toothbrushes are more affordable than Sonicare’s. If you’re talking about whose cleaning motion is better, there’s not enough evidence to tell at the time of writing.
The only major differences the Genius X and the 9000 have is their app and, depending on the model, the number of extra brush heads.
Yes, the DiamondClean Smart justifies its price. Seeing the coverage, pressure, and brushing time can give you an insight into your brushing habit. This helps you make necessary changes to improve your oral health. In addition, several studies show that the DiamondClean helps whiten teeth and improve gum health.
Brush heads typically last three months, depending on your usage. Both the Genius X and DiamondClean Smart have an app that can remind you when it’s time for a brush head replacement.
