Design

The mounting mechanism of SideTrak monitors is more stable and secure than Mobile Pixels’.

Mobile Pixels and SideTrak have several monitors that you can choose from, however, SideTrak offers more variety when it comes to their monitors’ mounting mechanisms. All Mobile Pixels monitors attach to the back of your laptop screen magnetically. They come with round metal plates with adhesives on the other side that you stick to the back of your laptop screen. These metal plates allow the monitor to attach to your laptop magnetically.

The magnets are strong enough that the monitor will stay in place when your laptop is on a desk. However, if you lift up your laptop while the Mobile Pixels monitor is extended, the frame may slide just a bit. It won’t fall off, but it’s not as secure as we’d like it to be.

Similarly, SideTrak has portable monitors that also attach to the back of your laptop screen using a similar magnetic system. However, they also have freestanding portable monitors that come with built-in kickstands.

SideTrak’s magnetic mounting mechanism is more stable and secure. You can lift up your laptop with the monitors extended and the frame at the back won’t budge. This is convenient since you don’t have to retract the monitors when you need to move. You don’t have to worry about the monitor falling off and getting damaged.

Display

SideTrak offers 4K and 1080p monitors while Mobile Pixels only has 1080p monitors.

The SideTrak Swivel is a versatile portable monitor that can be attached to your laptop and stand on its own.

When it comes to image quality, Mobile Pixels and SideTrak are similar. They use similar IPS panels that have a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz, 300 nits brightness and a good contrast ratio. For the most part, they are better than a lot of laptop monitors that still use TN panels and some that use VA panels. In some cases, Mobile Pixel and SideTrak portable monitors even have better images than laptops with IPS panels.

That said, SideTrak offers monitors that have a 4K resolution, whereas all Mobile Pixels monitors are only 1080p. SideTrak’s 4K monitors output superior images than Mobile Pixels monitors that are only 1080p. In addition to that, a 4K monitor will also give you more screen real estate, so it can help boost your productivity.

Another advantage that SideTrak has over Mobile Pixels is that they also offer touchscreen monitors. These touchscreen monitors are available in 1080p and 4K.

As far as screen sizes go, Mobile Pixels has three sizes available—12.5 inches, 13.3 inches and 14 inches. On the other hand, SideTrak portable monitors come in 12.5-inch, 14-inch and 15.6-inch sizes. If you have a 15 or 17 inch laptop, the bigger monitors of SideTrak will integrate better with them.

Dual and Triple Monitor Setup

You need to buy an additional accessory in order to use Mobile Pixels monitors in a triple screen setup; you don’t have to with SideTrak monitors.

Dual screen setups are easy to do with both Mobile Pixels and SideTrak. You just attach the magnets to the back of your laptop screen and attach the monitor frames. It’s even easier with SideTrak freestanding monitors since you just need to place them beside your laptop and plug in the required cable (USB-C or USB-C to USB-A with an adapter).

For triple monitor setups, Mobile Pixels TRIO and TRIO Max monitors use the same system. You need to purchase the Mobile Pixels Clips accessory in order to combine two TRIO or TRIO Max monitors and attach them to the back of your laptop as a single unit.

For SideTrak freestanding monitors, you don’t need any accessory since they don’t need to be attached to your laptop. As for SideTrak monitors that attach to your laptop, only the Swivel can be used in a triple screen setup. Using SideTrak Swivel monitors in a triple monitor setup is as easy as attaching them to the back of your laptop screen like normal. There’s no accessory needed.

Compatibility

SideTrak monitors offer better compatibility than Mobile Pixel monitors.

Mobile Pixels and SideTrak monitors are compatible with most operating systems.

All Mobile Pixels monitors, except for the Duex Lite, are compatible with Windows, Mac, Chrome, Samsung DeX and the Nintendo Switch. The Mobile Pixels Duex Lite is compatible only with Windows, Mac and Chrome. You can’t use it with Android devices that support DeX and with the Nintendo Switch.

SideTrak monitors, with the exception of the Slide, are compatible with Windows, Chrome, Linux, Mac, game consoles, iPhone, Android and Raspberry Pi. The SideTrak Slide monitors are only compatible with Windows, Chrome and Mac.

Verdict

SideTrak gives you more monitor options than Mobile Pixels.

If you are looking to get a portable monitor to use with your laptop, we recommend SideTrak monitors over Mobile Pixels monitors, specifically, the SideTrak Swivel monitors. SideTrak Swivel monitors are easy to attach to your laptop and they are secure and stable. They even have a built-in kickstand to support the monitor if your laptop’s hinges are on the weaker side. In addition to that, they are easy to setup in a triple screen layout since you don’t need to buy any additional accessories to do so.
