Design

The Logitech MX Master 3 has a narrower build which makes it more comfortable than the MX Master.

The Logitech MX Master (left) and MX Master 3 (right) have similar form factors, except for the length of the left and right click buttons.

Both the Logitech MX Master and MX Master 3 are right-handed mice with a large thumb rest. They look quite similar, except for the more rounded edges of the MX Master 3. They look professional and they will fit in perfectly in a work or office setting. One difference is that the Logitech MX Master 3 is narrower than the original MX Master. This narrower design makes it easier to grip, even for those with smaller hands.

The build quality of these mice is excellent. They feel durable and the buttons feel nice when clicked. However, the Logitech MX Master 3 has the advantage in overall build quality since its scroll wheels are less wobbly.

When it comes to comfort, you’ll find that both mice are easy to use and comfortable to hold. However, if you have smaller hands, you’ll likely prefer the Logitech MX Master 3 since it has a narrower shape that’s easier to grip. Both of them have a matte finish that also contribute to their overall comfort.

Performance

The MX Master 3 has an improved sensor with a wider sensitivity range and more adjustment options.

The side buttons on the Logitech MX Master (left) are harder to press than the more optimally placed ones on the Logitech MX Master 3 (right).

Sporting the Darkfield sensor, both mice will work on most surfaces, including glass, even without a mouse pad. This is especially helpful if you are a professional on the go and you don’t always have a mouse pad with you. Though they both have the Darkfield sensor, the version that is on the MX Master 3 is much improved, featuring a sensitivity range of 200 – 4000 dpi. The sensitivity range on the original MX Master is limited to 400 – 1600 dpi, in comparison. With a wider sensitivity range, you can customize the movement of the MX Master 3 better to fit your comfort level.

You can perform all the adjustments available for both mice using the Logitech Options software. The two mice do not have on board memory, so you don’t have the option of switching profiles on the go. But you can save the settings on the software itself.

The two have the same number of buttons that include the left/right click, a scroll wheel, a thumb wheel, two side buttons and a button for switching devices at the bottom. Under the scroll wheel is a button that enables/disables their hyper-scrolling feature. You can connect these mice to up to three devices and switch between them with a press on the button on their underside.

While they have the same number of buttons, the placement is much better on the Logitech MX Master 3. The side buttons are placed just under the thumb wheel and this simple adjustment makes the button easier to reach, especially for those with smaller hands.

Battery and Connectivity

The Logitech MX Master can last up to 40 days with a single charge while the MX Master 3 lasts up to 70 days.

One of the biggest improvements with the Logitech MX Master 3 comes in the form of its battery life. The original MX Master has a battery life of up to 40 days, which is impressive in itself, but the newer MX Master 3 has a battery life of up to 70 days, which is excellent, to say the least. With its improved battery life, you don’t have to worry about losing charge in the middle of doing something. And if you do, the MX Master 3 has a quick charge function that will give you 3 hours of battery with a 1 minute charge.

The Logitech MX Master and MX Master 3 both offer Bluetooth and a 2.4GHz wireless connection. To charge them, the MX Master comes with a micro USB cable and the MX Master 3 comes with a USB-C cable. These cables are for charging only; the two mice will only work wirelessly even if the cables are plugged in.

Verdict

The Logitech MX Master 3 has many worthwhile improvements over the original MX Master.

If you are choosing between these two mice, we recommend the Logitech MX Master 3 over the MX Master. It has an improved sensor that greatly enhances its overall performance, its buttons are placed more optimally and it has some design improvements that make it more comfortable. That said, the original Logitech MX Master is still a good option if you can get it at a heavily discounted price.
