Logitech C922 vs C920 (2022): An Everyday Webcam Against A Webcam For Streamers

Let’s face it, the webcams that come with our laptops aren’t very impressive. Their videos and photos lack clarity and detail, leaving most of us in need of a third-party webcam. A high-quality external webcam is especially important now that everyone’s comfortably settled into the work-from-home life and business meetings have gone virtual. If you’re in the market for a webcam that won’t embarrass you, Logitech is one of the best brands to look into, with the C922 and the C920 as some of their most popular models.

Deciding between the Logitech C922 and C920 can be a little tricky, however. While both are amazing at taking clear and sharp videos and photos, the Logitech C920 is more of an everyday webcam while the Logitech C922 comes with more advanced features (eg: dynamic background removal) that make it perfect for the streamers out there. To help you figure out which one is better suited to your needs and budget, here’s an in-depth look at these two Logitech webcams.

Design

The Logitech C922 and C920 don’t stray far from each other when it comes to design.

Both the Logitech C922 (left) and C920 (right) have tripod mounts but only the C922 comes with its own tripod.ย

If you were to look at the Logitech C922 and C920 without knowing which one’s which, it would be pretty easy to get them mixed up. They’re very similar in terms of design, both sporting an all-black, slightly bulky casing, a 1080p camera in the middle, and microphones on each side. They’re equipped with the same rear-mounted arm as well, making it easy for you to fasten them securely onto your laptop or computer monitor. They even have the same 5-foot cord jutting out from behind, giving you enough length to connect your webcam to your device without any problem.

While both webcams come with a tripod mount, the C922 has the upper hand over its predecessor because it already has its own tripod. It’s a rare thing for a webcam to come with one so it’s definitely a nice surprise, saving you from the hassle of having to look on your own. With the tripod, you can set it down on your table and enjoy different camera perspectives instead of the usual top view as your webcam hovers above you. And with the C922’s 360-degree swivel mount, it willย  be so much easier to explore those angles.

Picture and Sound Quality

The Logitech C922 beats the C920 when it comes to video quality, able to record at 720p at 60fps.

Both the Logitech C922 and C920 have a 78-degree field of view.

Equipped with the same sensor and hardware, you can trust both the Logitech C922 and C920 to take razor-sharp pictures with impressive color accuracy. With their Full HD, five-element glass lenses, they’ll pick up even the smallest details like individual strands of hair and the stitches on your shirt if you’re in a well-lit room. If you’re in a darker environment, however, the C922 should fare better given that it has more advanced low-light correcting capabilities but it’s a subtle improvement that some might not even notice at all.

When it comes to video quality, the C922 and C920 are yet again head to head. We have to give this one to the C922 though because it can record at 720p at 60fps while the C920 can only do so at 30fps. As for something that both of these models can boast of, it’s the fact they’re rigged with a 78-degree field of view, meaning you can have someone beside you and you would both be perfectly in frame. This is pretty uncommon for webcams as most them are only wide enough to fit one person.

Aside from great picture and video quality, you can count on both the C922 and C920 to record loud and clear sound without picking up most of the ambient noise in the room. It’s definitely not professional-grade audio but you can’t expect that from webcams anyway.

Software

The Logitech C920 is more for everyday webcam users while the C922 is geared more for streamers.ย

The Logitech C922 can create a green screen effect, a feature useful in gaming.ย

If you’re looking to enjoy more features with your Logitech C920, its compatibility with Logitech’s Webcam Software for Windows will give you just that. With the software, you’ll have access to different backgrounds and avatars which you can use during your video calls to make them more entertaining. You can also use the software to zoom in and out as well as pan from side to side, letting you frame yourself exactly the way you want to. Not just that but you can even use your C920 as a security camera when you put it in motion-detection mode via the software, a handy feature if you want to keep a close eye on the belongings on your desk.

As for the Logitech C922, the software it’s compatible with are geared more towards streamers instead of everyday webcam users. ChromaCam, for example, is able to create a green screen effect and remove the background behind the user. This feature is primarily meant for streaming, allowing you to display your head and torso on top of the game you’re playing, but you can also use it for other video applications such as Skype. There are a bunch of preset backgrounds to choose from but you can also upload your own images and use those as your backdrop. Another example of a compatible software is the XSplit Gamecaster which similarly removes your background and lets you edit your videos.

Verdict

If you don’t care for the background removal feature, save money and buy the Logitech C920.
