Leesa Original Construction

The Leesa Original has a 3-layer construction.

Leesa uses a proprietary foam in the comfort layer that’s comparable to latex.

The Leesa Original mattress has a thick polyester cover that’s soft to the touch. Although it is thick, it does not cause the mattress to sleep hot. You can sleep directly on the cover but Leesa recommends that you use a bed sheet.

The top layer or the comfort layer of the Leesa Original is a proprietary foam. It has some of the properties that latex is known for–bounciness, responsiveness and pressure relief. It’s a great alternative to latex as it is not as expensive.

The middle layer is memory foam and it is responsible for providing you with the “hug” that memory foam is known for. It is very comfortable and because it is below the proprietary foam, it does not make it hard to move, unlike mattresses that use memory foam at the top. Also, its heat retention is minimized.

The base layer is for additional support and it gives shape to the mattress. This layer is made with high-density polyfoam.

Casper Original Construction

The Casper Original features a 3-layer design.

Casper uses a proprietary “Airspace” foam in the comfort layer of their mattress.

The Casper Original also has a polyester cover, but unlike the Leesa Original, it is not very thick. It is very breathable and it is also soft.

The top layer or the comfort layer of the mattress is a proprietary foam called Airscape foam. It is perforated to allow for more cooling. The foam is very responsive and provides pressure relief.

Below the comfort layer is a memory foam layer that features the Zoned Support with three ergonomic zones. This layer provides you the comfort of memory foam and the three zones ensure that you are in an optimal position while you sleep. The foam is softer at the shoulder and lower body area and firmer at the mid-zone to provide support for your hips and lower back.

The base layer is similar to the one in the Leesa mattress. It is made with polyurethane foam and it provides support as well as shape to the mattress.

Performance

Both mattresses perform similarly in many areas. The Casper Original is slightly better when it comes to cooling, but only by a very small margin.

A side-by-side look at the Leesa Original (left) and the Casper Original (right).

In this section, we’ll compare their performance and see how they do in different categories.

  • Firmness – They are very similar when it comes to firmness. In the firmness scale of 1-10 where 1 is soft and 10 is very firm, both are around 6 to 6.5. The Casper Original is a bit firmer, but not by much.
  • Temperature – Foam mattresses usually have a problem with heat retention, but not these two. Both Leesa and Casper made sure that their mattresses won’t sleep hot by using specialty or proprietary foams with cooling properties. However, since the Casper is slightly firmer, you won’t sink in too much, resulting in less heat-trapping.
  • Motion Transfer – There’s not much difference when it comes to motion transfer. Both are great in this area.
  • Off-Gassing – Both mattresses come in a box, so you should expect a slight chemical smell once you unpack them. The smell is not dangerous and will dissipate in a couple of days.

Warranty and Other Considerations

There’s not much difference when it comes to both companies’ warranty and sleep trial.

Both Leesa and Casper offer 10-year warranties and 100-night sleep trials.

Warranty and sleep trial duration are basically the same for both companies. They both offer 10-year warranties, and the sleep trial is 100 nights from the day you receive your mattress. Both use CertiPUR-US certified foams so you can expect the materials to be of high quality and safe for use.

The Casper Original is great for people that predominantly sleep on their backs or on their stomachs as it is a slightly firmer mattress. The Leesa Original is great for side sleepers and people that change positions often.

Verdict

Leesa is great for side sleepers while the Casper is great for back and stomach sleepers.

As both mattresses are very similar in many regards, the choice comes down to your sleeping position and your preferred firmness. The Leesa Original is recommended for people that sleep on their sides due to its medium firmness. For back sleepers and side sleepers, the better choice is the Casper Original. Casper is also slightly better when it comes to cooling, albeit by a small margin, so that may also be a consideration.
