Design

The JBL Xtreme 2 has more color options than the JBL Boombox 2.

Both speakers are built to last. The tight knit fabric that surrounds the speakers is very durable and even though the two speakers are made of mostly plastic parts, they still feel sturdy. They both have an IPX7 rating, meaning that they are water resistant, so they can be used in the shower, in pool parties and any gathering near water without getting damaged.

The two have a cylindrical shape and at each end are bass radiators made of plastic. On the JBL Xtreme 2, there are two hooks at the top to connect the included strap, while the JBL Boombox 2 has a plastic handle for easy carrying. The JBL Boombox 2 is bigger and heavier, but the built-in handle makes it easy to carry around.

The JBL Xtreme 2 is available in black, camo, blue, red and green colors while the JBL Boombox 2 has two color options—black and camo.

Features

The JBL Xtreme 2 has a speakerphone function and it has voice assistant support, both of which are not available on the JBL Boombox 2.

These two speakers can be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth or via a 3.5mm analog connection. The older JBL Xtreme 2 comes with Bluetooth 4.2 while the JBL Boombox 2 has Bluetooth 5.1. In terms of connection reliability, both are excellent and you will rarely experience any stutters or connection drops.

Since the JBL Xtreme 2 is older, it comes with JBL’s older Connect+ protocol. This means that it can only be paired with older JBL speakers that have the Connect+ feature. The JBL Boombox 2, on the other hand, comes with the newer PartyBoost protocol so it can be paired with newer JBL speakers that have this feature, such as the Flip 5, Xtreme 3 and more.

Both speakers can be used as a powerbank to charge any compatible device, such as your phone. The JBL Xtreme 2 has built-in mics and it has a speakerphone function. You can also control it via voice assistant. The JBL Boombox 2 does not have these extra features.

Sound

The JBL Boombox 2 is louder and it produces better overall sound than the JBL Xtreme 2.

When it comes to sound quality, the JBL Boombox 2 definitely beats the JBL Xtreme 2. The JBL Boombox 2 can get louder and it does so without sacrificing audio quality. The bass of the JBL Boombox 2 is tighter and more defined while the mid and highs are fairly accurate. The overall sound of the JBL Boombox 2 is clearer and more detailed.

In contrast, the bass response of the JBL Xtreme 2 is weaker, which is understandable since it is more compact. The biggest issue with its sound is its underemphasized highs, which tend to have a slightly dark and veiled overall sound. The mid-range is pretty accurate.

Battery Life

The JBL Boombox 2 has a longer battery life than the JBL Xtreme 2.

Capable of playing music to up to 24 hours, the JBL Boombox 2 will last longer than the JBL Xtreme 2, which is able to play music up to 15 hours. The battery life of the JBL Boombox 2 is impressive since it is also able to output more power for louder music.

To fully charge the JBL Boombox 2, you’ll need to charge it for around 6.5 hours while the JBL Xtreme 2 only needs 3.5 hours of charging time to get full from an empty state.

The JBL Xtreme 2 has more features and it is easier to carry around, but the JBL Boombox 2 offers better sound.
