Both the Insta360 One X2 (left) and the GoPro Max (right) are waterproof for up to 10 meters.

Like most action cameras on the market, both the Insta360 One X2 and the GoPro Max have rugged bodies that can take on all kinds of weather conditions. You can even dunk them in up to ten meters of water and they should come out completely fine. They do, however, have contrasting looks.

The Insta360 One X2 sports a candy bar shape with its two lenses found up top on either side and its round display in the middle. Although small, the location of the touchscreen is on point, allowing for easy framing and access to all controls and settings. Build-wise, its chunky plastic body feels solid, plus it’s nice that it has textured rubber on the sides for extra grip.

As for the GoPro Max, it sports a square silhouette with lenses on both sides. Its touchscreen is significantly larger so you should have a much easier time using it. Also, its camera has lens protectors, a feature that’s missing on the Insta360 One X2. In terms of construction, the GoPro Max feels like it can survive anything, thanks to its hardened plastic body and thick layer of rubber protection.

Another difference to take note of is their mounts. On the Insta360 One X2, you’ll find a 1/4 inch mount while the GoPro Max makes use of a proprietary mount that’s compatible with a bunch of different accessories. The GoPro Max definitely has the upper hand if we’re talking about versatility.

Photo and Video Quality

The GoPro Max has better image quality but the Insta360 X2 has more shooting modes.

Insta360 One X2 vs GoPro Max performance
Both the Insta360 One X2 (left) and the GoPro Max (right) have a max resolution of 5.7K at 30fps.

On paper, the Insta360 One X2 and the GoPro Max seem to be of the same calibre. Both are able to shoot at a maximum video resolution of 5.7K which turns into 1080p if converted into the flat format. The Insta360 One X2 is able to shoot the maximum resolution at 24, 25, and 30fps and 4K at 50fps. You can also record in 3K at 100fps for slow motion videos. As for the GoPro Max, it can shoot 5.7K at 30fps and 4K at 60fps, forgoing the 25fps option.

While the Insta360 One X2 and the GoPro Max aren’t too different in terms of specs, the same can’t be said for their output. It’s quite obvious that the GoPro Max is equipped with more advanced color and lens technology which result in better image quality. That said, the Insta360 One X2 isn’t too far behind. Its videos appear brighter than the GoPro Max’s but they also tend to be noisier.

However, the Insta360 One X2 comes out on top if we’re talking about shooting modes. The Pureshot mode is especially handy when you’re shooting 360 content, able to piece together several exposures to bump up the quality of your images. It’s commendable as well that it has RAW, LOG, and HDR modes. Do note, however, that the last one only works when you’re not moving the camera around. Unfortunately, the GoPro Max doesn’t shoot in either RAW or HDR.

When it comes to stabilization, both of these 360 cameras are capable of delivering buttery smooth action shots. The Insta360’s stabilization software is called Flowstate while the GoPro Max’s is Hypersmooth 2.0 but difference in name aside, they essentially do the same thing.

Editing Software

The Insta360 One X2’s editing app is more advanced than the GoPro Max’s.

The Insta360 One X2’s editing app allows for object tracking and speed adjusting, both of which are missing on the GoPro Max.

Because 360 photos and videos hold so many creative editing possibilities, it’s important to consider the editing apps they come with. While both the Insta360 One X2 and the GoPro Max’s editing apps are easy to navigate, they come with some key differences.

The best thing about the Insta360 One X2’s editing app is that you don’t have to bother with transferring your files. Just hook the camera up to your phone and you can then start editing. The app also has several handy features such as an AI editor that will automatically enhance your shots and a Shot Lab that lets you add cool effects to your 360 photos and videos. Other features you can take advantage of include an object tracker, filters, a speed adjuster, and a color editor. The only downside to this app is that your phone needs to have a capable processor or else it tends to crash.

As for the GoPro Max’s editing app, it’s not as feature-packed but this also means it’s less likely to glitch on you. With it, you can easily adjust the color of your photos and videos, add transitions and music, and reframe your shots. Don’t expect anything fancy like object tracking though. Also, you’re going to have to transfer your photos to your phone first before you can edit them.

The Insta360 One X2 provides more editing possibilities but the GoPro Max delivers better images.
