The GoPro Hero 10 is the newest release from the leading action camera brand and it’s the most powerful model yet. Equipped with a brand new processor, its touchscreen is extra snappy and it can shoot at an impressive max resolution of 5K at 60fps.
We shouldn’t forget, however, that GoPro has another powerhouse in its lineup and that’s the GoPro Max. It’s the flagship 360 action camera that allows you to get as creative as you want to be with your shots. So which is the better GoPro for you? Here’s an in-depth comparison of the two models to help you choose, covering their design, performance, and additional features.
GoPro Hero 10 vs Max Comparison Chart
Both the GoPro Hero 10 and Max are ruggedly built but have different design elements.
GoPro is known for making some of the most rugged action cameras around and the Hero 10 and Max are proof of this. Both models are waterproof for up to 10 meters without any protective case, plus they’re covered in a durable and grippy material that can really withstand a beating. Aside from being able to survive in any kind of environment, the Hero and the Max are also compatible with a wide range of mods and accessories. They’re equipped with a built-in mount so you can pretty much attach them to anything without needing a case.
While they have these things in common, it’s obvious that they have very different looks. The Hero 10 is the more compact model of the two but it has a larger rear display and also has an LCD screen with live preview out front. With the Max, you only get one small rear display. But because it’s a 360 action camera, it’s equipped with a camera in front and another one at the back. And if you’ll notice, the lenses are dome-shaped. This is because they’re fish-eye lenses that have a combined 360-degree field of view. These lenses are quite fragile because they protrude out of the camera and are completely exposed but fortunately, they come with lens covers.
The GoPro Hero 10 has better video resolution but you can be more creative with the Max.
Thanks to its new GP2 processor and 23.6MP chip, the GoPro Hero 10 has the superpower of recording at an impressive resolution of 5.3K at 60fps. It delivers vibrant yet accurate colors and extra crisp images, making it the most advanced GoPro model and the best action camera you can currently get your hands on. But of course, you also have the option to dial it back to 4K at 120fps or go slow-mo at 2.7K at 240fps. If you like capturing still frames, the Hero 10 is amazing at this, able to give you 19.6MP images if you’re shooting in 5K with the 4:3 ratio. This becomes 15.8MP if you’re recording in 4K with the same ratio.
As for the GoPro Max, it has a maximum resolution of 5.6K at 30fps. While it may sound like it has better specs than the Hero 10, don’t let the numbers fool you because the Max doesn’t come close. This is because it has to spread its pixels over 360 degrees while the Hero 10 only has to deal with around 200 degrees. But even though video quality is a little compromised, you do get to enjoy a lot of versatility with the Max. Because you have a 360-degree field of view, you can capture all of the exciting moments going on around you. Plus the footage you get is truly immersive. You also have the option to pick out scenes and convert them into the normal flat format if you feel like it.
Once again, the GoPro Hero 10 is about quality while the Max is about creativity.
While you don’t normally buy action cameras to take pictures with them, it’s still nice to know how much image quality you can squeeze out of these two. As mentioned, the GoPro Hero 10 is equipped with a 23.6MP chip so the images you get with it are pretty decent. Not the best but compared to the Max, you get sharper details and better dynamic range. If you want to get the most out of the Hero 10, it’s best that you shoot in RAW for an extra boost in image quality.
The Max lags behind the Hero 10 in terms of quality, only able to deliver 18MP images. But again, it makes up for this by giving you more space for creativity. Because it has two lenses, you can take amazing panorama shots with it or you can also just use one camera and shoot normal flat images. And with its editing software, you can easily add music and transitions to your videos as well as tweak the colors and reframe your shots.
The GoPro Max has better stabilization while the Hero 10 has better battery life.
The GoPro Hero 10 is equipped with the latest HyperSmooth 4.0 software while the Max only has the 2.0 version. But even though the Hero 10 has this advantage, the Max is unbeatable in terms of stabilization. This is because as a 360 action camera, its two lenses give it so much more information which it uses to create buttery smooth footage. No matter how rough your action shots are, the Max can make them look as if they were recorded professionally.
While the Max wins in the stabilization department, the Hero 10 has a slightly more dependable battery life. It can last up to 76 minutes if you’re recording in 4K at 60fps while the Max can only manage around 45 minutes. Another handy thing about the Hero 10 is that it comes with a webcam mode. Simply hook it up to your computer and you can then enjoy higher-quality Zoom meetings. This feature is missing on the Max.
The GoPro Hero 10 wins against the GoPro Max.
