Generac GP2200i vs Honda (2021): Which Brand Makes Better Portable Inverter Generators?

Honda is generally accepted as one of the best manufacturers of generators. One big reason is its machines are typically quiet, long-lasting, and reliable, but they’re not exactly the most affordable available. That’s where Generac comes in, which makes cheaper options but doesn’t skimp on quality.

That said, we put Generac’s GP2200i side by side with Honda’s EU2200i, two inverter generators that are similar in terms of performance, portability, and features. That way you can get a clearer idea of what each brand has to offer.

Performance

The EU2200i has a higher running watts than the GP2200i, allowing it to power more devices simultaneously.

Generac GP2200i vs Honda Performance
The GP2200i (left) has a longer runtime than the EU2200i (right).

Both have the same 2,200 starting watts to power on your motor-driven appliances. Now the GP2200i has a running watts of 1,700, but the EU2200i has a higher wattage of 1,800, meaning that it can support more items at a time.

However, that comes at a price: a shorter total runtime. To be exact, the GP2200i can last up to 10.75 hours at 25 percent capacity. On the other hand, the EU2200i can only go up to 8.1 hours at the same load.

That’s not the only factor, though. The GP2200i has a larger fuel capacity of 1.2 gallons compared to the EU2200i’s 0.95 tank. At any rate, both have a THD less than three percent, and that means you can safely charge even sensitive electronics.

As for how quiet they are, the EU2200i is rated between 53 and 62 dB. Thing is, Generac doesn’t provide numbers on this front, which really says a lot about it (read: its products are usually louder than most of its counterparts in the market).

Portability

The EU2200i weighs less and has a smaller form factor than the GP2200i.

Generac GP2200i vs Honda Portability
Even though the GP2200i (left) is a bit heavier and bigger than the EU2200i (right), it’s still portable.

When it comes to weight and measurements, the two are similar. The GP2200i weighs 46.6 lbs and measures 11.4” x 17.9” x 19.7” (width, height, and length), while the EU2200i is 46.5 lbs and comes in at 11.4” x 16.7” x 20”. The two also have handles at the top, making them easy to carry around.

The takeaway here is the EU2200i is slightly lighter and shorter than the GP2200i, so it’s a bit easier to bring along, say, tailgate parties or camping trips.

Features

Both have staples such as LED indicators, and they’re also parallel capable.

Generac GP2200i vs Honda Features
The GP2200i (left) has two DC outlets, while the EU220i (right) has only one.

On either generator, you’ll use a pull starter to turn it on. In other words, neither of them have an electric starter.

Both have two AC outlets, but the GP2200i has two DC outlets: one 12V 8A receptacle and one 5V USB port. The EU2200i only has one with a 12V 8A output. For the record, there’s no GFCI outlets in the mix.

Each one also has standard features such as low-oil, power, and overload LED indicators, and they’re also parallel ready if one generator isn’t enough.

Verdict

You can’t go wrong with either Generac or Honda.

To boil things down, the GP2200i has a longer runtime and better fuel efficiency, but the EU2200i has the higher running watts to power more items simultaneously. Put differently, the decision here is really a matter of what your situation calls for.

Between the brands themselves, Generac sells generators that are more affordable and economical, but Honda makes quieter and more reliable machines overall.
