Build and Display

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is bigger and sturdier than the Galaxy Watch 5.

Notice how the bezel on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro (left) is protruding, while it’s more flush on the Galaxy Watch 5 (right).

At first glance, it’s fairly easy to tell these wearables apart. Unlike the standard model, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a protruded bezel to protect its display from nicks and dings. Also, it sports a more durable titanium case as compared to aluminum, and it features a new and sturdier D-Buckle Sport Band. That said, both are compliant with the MIL-STD-810H standard, and they have the same IP68 and 5ATM water resistance rating.

As mentioned, the Galaxy Watch 5 is available in 40mm and 44mm. The former measures 39.3mm x 40.4mm x 9.8mm, and the latter measures 43.3mm x 44.4mm x 9.8mm. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro comes only in 45mm, clocking in at 45.4mm x 45.4mm x 10.5mm.

The 44mm Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro have a 1.4-inch 450 x 450 Super AMOLED touchscreen topped with sapphire crystal glass. Meanwhile, the 40mm Galaxy Watch 5 has pretty much the same display, except that it measures 1.2 inches with a lower resolution of 396 x 396. On an interesting note, they use digital bezels instead, which is a departure from the rotating physical bezel on the Galaxy Watch 4.

Lastly, the Galaxy Watch 5 comes in Graphite and Silver, but the 40mm is also available in Pink Gold and the 44mm in Sapphire. In contrast, the color options of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are more limited: Black Titanium and Gray Titanium.

Performance and Battery Life

With the same chipset, memory and operating system, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro should have about the same performance.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro (in photo) features a larger 590mAh battery.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro have the same Exynos W920 chip, and they even have the same 1.5GB RAM and 16GB of storage. Moreover, both are powered by Wear OS 3.5 with One UI Watch 4.5 skin on top out of the box. In other words, they’re virtually the same when it comes to performance.

On a similar note, these smartwatches also have GPS, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz bands) and NFC for Samsung Pay and Google Wallet. Each one has an optional LTE model as well, but needless to say, that will cost extra.

In terms of battery life, it’s a different story. The 40mm and 44mm Galaxy Watch 5 has a 284mAh and 410mAh battery, respectively, and they’re rated to last up to 50 hours. In comparison, the Pro model has a larger 590mAh battery, and on a single charge, it’s good for up to 80 hours.

Additionally, they have fast charging, owing to their new USB-C charger. Samsung claims it can go from zero to 45 percent in only 30 minutes or get enough juice for eight hours of sleep tracking in only eight minutes.

Activity and Health Tracking

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has more features for outdoor activities than the Galaxy Watch 5.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (in photo) comes in 40mm and 44mm case sizes.

In what’s becoming a recurring theme here, the two have the same health tracking capabilities. Put simply, they have sensors to monitor heart rate, electrocardiogram (ECG), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and blood oxygen (SpO2). They can monitor sleep and stress as well.

Building on their previous iteration, there’s also a new skin temperature sensor in the mix. Notably, they have a curved sensor design, and according to Samsung, this allows them to provide more accurate readings because of how they’re closer to your skin.

When it comes to activity tracking, they have staples like GPS-enabled running and cycling. For the record, both have more than 90 exercise modes, and they can automatically detect when you start working out. However, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has the edge in this department with additional features, namely Turn-by-Turn Directions and Track Back so you’ll always stay on route and make it back to where you started.

Verdict

Essentially, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is the rugged smartwatch, while the Galaxy Watch 5 is the wearable for daily use.

To sum things up, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is more or less the same as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro with only a few differences here and there.

From a practical standpoint, the Galaxy Watch 5 is the better pick for everyday use. For starters, it’s more affordable, and it’s arguably more stylish and sleeker, offering more color options and varying sizes. If you’re into hiking or other outdoor activities, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is your best bet. The inclusion of Turn-by-Turn Directions and Track Back is a testament to that. Also, it’s more durable with its titanium case.
