The Apple Watch 4 has a slightly more premium build but the Fitbit Versa 3 has an always-on display.

There’s a lot more softness to the curves of the Fitbit Versa 3 (left) while the Apple Watch Series 4 (right) has crisp interlocking parts.

Fitbit’s subtle design changes have made the most recent Versa look better than ever. The Versa 3’s square case has more rounded curves with a nice matte aluminum finish. In comparison, the Apple Watch Series 5 has a flatter profile, and its rectangular case has tamer rounding on the corners. The large Digital Crown on the Apple Watch is also a prominent difference, as it provides a more precise control over the touchscreen in certain apps.

Interestingly, Fitbit’s new straps, called ‘infinity bands’, look very similar to that of the Apple Watch in terms of overall design and texture. The locking mechanism in particular is quite different from previous Versa bands as these are all in silicone while the now older straps usually combined silicone and metal components. The change is designed to make the Versa 3 more comfortable to wear whether you’re resting or perspiring from working out.

Despite their different screen shapes, the Versa 3 and 40mm Apple Watch 4 have similar display sizes. The Versa 3 has improved its resolution from the Versa 2, and now offers nearly similar crispness as the Apple Watch. One key advantage of the Versa 3, however, is its always-on display option, allowing you to use your smartwatch more like an actual wristwatch. This feature is notably absent on the Series 4 and was only added on the Apple Watch Series 5.

Activity Tracking

The Apple Watch 4 has an ECG monitor while the Fitbit Versa 3 has sleep tracking.

These two features may heavily influence your choice between the Versa 3 and Apple Watch 4.

While both Versa 3 and Series 4 have optical heart rate monitors, along with the now standard array of fitness sensors, such as a pedometer, accelerometer, etc., two key features to both can be the reason why one of them is better-suited for you than the other.

The Apple Watch Series 4 has an ECG app that can detect irregular rhythm, low and high heart rate, and alert you with notifications. There have already been several reported cases where this particular feature has saved lives, giving enough early warning for users to seek medical attention.

On the other hand, the Fitbit Versa 3 has sleep tracking, which is a commonly overlooked aspect of health and fitness. With its excellent battery life, the Versa 3 can track light, deep and REM sleep, providing you a Sleep Score that can help you improve the quality of rest you’re getting to complement your training efforts. Plus, Fitbit Premium gives you even more guided programs and coaching.

As such, the Fitbit Versa 3 can make for a better fitness companion while the Apple Watch Series 4 has a more health-focused slant. The Fitbit app itself also arguably offers a deeper fitness tracking experience in combination with the Versa 3’s goal-based exercise modes. Both smartwatches have automatic workout detection so you can be sure that your stats are getting recorded.

Smart Features

The Apple Watch 4 has a deeper app library while the Fitbit Versa 3 has added voice control options.

The Versa 3 is a better than ever smartwatch compared to earlier editions.

Because of how well-supported and developed the WatchOS library is, you’ll find a more diverse collection of apps for the Apple Watch Series 4 than on the Fitbit Versa 3. However, note that you’ll need an iPhone to use it, while the Versa 3 works with both iOS and Android devices.

Both have built-in GPS, which, in the case of Fitbit’s smartwatch, is a long-due feature. They also have all of the connectivity options you may want, including Wi-Fi and NFC, so you can pay with either on your wrist. However, the Apple Watch does have a cellular option, letting you completely leave your phone behind, though you’ll need a separate plan for it.

While the Apple Watch Series 4 has Siri fully functional and ready to go, Fitbit doubles up on the Versa 3’s voice control options with support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Unlike previous Versa models, the Versa 3 comes with a speaker, so you can actually get vocal responses from your voice assistant. Moreover, this allows you to answer phone calls using your watch.

Battery Life and Other Features

The Fitbit Versa 3 has a much longer battery life than the Apple Watch 4.

Get uninterrupted use of your Fitbit Versa 3 for days.

The one aspect where Apple has yet to meaningfully improve on its smartwatch is its battery life. A full charge on the Series 4 will only give you around 18 hours or so, which can feel insufficient for a device you’d like to be wearing at all times. Turning GPS on will drain this much quicker, too.

This only makes the Versa 3 more impressive, since it can last more than six days while offering similar functionality and a display just as bright and high-res. You’ll still want to rein in continuous GPS usage, though, and the always-on display will also eat up battery life more quickly. However, the Versa 3 has a fast charging feature with its new charger, letting you get up to a full day with just 12 minutes of being plugged in. It’s a big one indeed for people on the go.

The Fitbit Versa 3 offers better value than the Apple Watch Series 4.

At this point, the Fitbit Versa 3 can go toe-to-toe with the Apple Watch in terms of fitness tracking and smartwatch perks. So with their sizable price difference, we’d recommend the Versa 3 for the majority of users who are looking to enhance their lifestyle with a health and fitness companion. It’s no contest if you compare battery life, and with an always-on display, the Fitbit Versa 3 can be worn like an actual time-telling watch.

Those who simply prefer Apple devices will surely not mind spending extra for the Apple Watch Series 4, since it pays to stay within its ecosystem. Its ECG monitor as well as the option of going for a cellular-enabled model are also big reasons to go for the more premium smartwatch.

๐Ÿ“Œ Is there a big difference between the Apple Watch 3 and 4?

The Apple Watch Series 4 has a 30% larger display than the Series 3, along with a faster processor and brighter screen. In addition, the Series 4 has an FDA-cleared ECG monitor, which can warn users of potential heart conditions.

๐Ÿ“Œ Why is Apple Watch 4 discontinued?

Apple is no longer selling the Apple Watch Series 4 on its website due to how similar it is with the most recent model, the Series 5. However, the Series 4 continues to be sold on third party retailers such as Amazon.

๐Ÿ“Œ Can Fitbit Versa 3 send texts?

Yes, but only with paired Android smartphones. The Fitbit Versa 3 has preset and customizable quick responses for SMS, Gmail, Twitter, Facebook Messenger, and more.

๐Ÿ“Œ Is the Fitbit Versa 3 worth buying?

Yes, the Fitbit Versa 3 is a significant upgrade over the Versa 2, as it now has built-in GPS, PurePulse 2.0 heart tracking, more voice assistant options, and a speaker, for only a bit more on the price tag.
