Design

The Apple Watch Series 3 is able to fit all sizes while the Fitbit Luxe can only be worn by those with smaller wrists.

Fitbit Luxe vs Apple Watch design
The Fitbit Luxe (left) has a sleek and discreet design while the Apple Watch 3 (right) looks every bit like a smartwatch.

The Apple Watch Series 3 and the Fitbit Luxe couldn’t look any more different from each other. With the latter, you get a sleek and slim silhouette that’s reminiscent of other Fitbit models. Because the watch face is long and narrow and the band is thin, this model will fit nicely on smaller wrists. Unfortunately, the Fitbit Luxe’s larger band can only accommodate wrists that are 180 to 220mm in size so if yours is on the thicker side, you might want to look somewhere else. Designed with fashion in mind, the Fitbit Luxe comes in a bunch of different colorways. There’s white and gold, black and graphite, orchid and platinum, and the special edition gorjana soft gold.

As for the Apple Watch Series 3, we’re all familiar with its iconic design by now. It looks every bit like a smartwatch with its square face and rounded edges. And because there’s more screen area to work with, the Series 3 is able to display so much more information than the Luxe. Also, you get to choose from a wider range of watch faces which is always fun. Another advantage that you can enjoy with the Series 3 is that it comes in two different sizes, namely 38mm and 42mm. This means that it’s able to fit wrists of all sizes unlike the Luxe. In terms of materials, you can get the Series 3 either in stainless steel or aluminum.

Fitness Features

The Apple Watch Series 3 and the Fitbit Luxe are neck and neck when it comes to fitness tracking but both are lacking when it comes to health monitoring.

Fitbit Luxe vs Apple Watch fitness features
Both the Fitbit Luxe (left) and the Apple Watch 3 (right) have an auto start feature.

The Fitbit Luxe is a tiny little thing which is why it’s pleasantly surprising how much it can track in terms of fitness. This makes it comparable to the Apple Watch Series 3. Both models are able to monitor your workouts, how many steps you take, your heart rate, and your active minutes. They even know how to automatically start tracking your workout if you accidentally forget to hit the start button. They’re pretty good at keeping you motivated too. With the Series 3, you get three rings which close in on themselves as you progress with your fitness goals. As for the Luxe, you can customize your daily targets and you’ll get encouraging notifications as you hit them.

As for health tracking, neither the Series 3 nor the Luxe offers a complete set of features. While both are able to monitor your heart rate, only the Series 3 is able to detect heart irregularities and send you notifications. Also, the Series 3 can detect elevation and is able to track how many flights of stairs you’ve climbed. This feature is missing on the Luxe. As for blood oxygen level or Sp02 monitoring, neither of them have it although the Luxe is set to get an update soon and it will have this feature then. As an outdated model, the Series 3 won’t be getting this update.

Additional Features

The Fitbit Luxe has better battery life but the Apple Watch Series has built-in storage and GPS.

Fitbit Luxe vs Apple Watch additional features
The Fitbit Luxe can last up to 5 days on a single charge.

Battery life is where the gap between the Apple Watch Series 3 and the Fitbit Luxe really starts to widen. You might find it quite disappointing that the Series 3 can’t even last a day, only able to manage 18 hours of use before it needs a recharge. This number can go down even further if you have GPS on. As for the Fitbit Luxe, you don’t need to always have the charger nearby because it can last up to five whole days without additional juice. So if you’re the type who needs to track every single workout without missing a beat, the Luxe might be the better match for you.

But even though the Series 3 is greatly lacking in the battery life department, it does try to make up for this through other features. Thanks to its built-in storage, you can download your playlists on Apple Music and play them back even if you’re offline. Do note, however, that you need to be subscribed to Apple Music to enjoy this feature. The Luxe doesn’t have built-in storage so you’re going to have to rely on your phone for music. Another advantage that you can enjoy with the Series 3 is built-in GPS. This allows you to go jogging or cycling outside without your phone while still being able to track your location and route. With the Luxe, you get connected GPS only which means you still need to have your phone with you.

Verdict

Go for the Apple Watch Series 3 if you want an affordable entry into the world of Apple Watches but choose the Fitbit Luxe if you want style and impressive battery life.

It’s not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison because the Apple Watch Series 3 and the Fitbit Luxe are from different times, have completely different looks, and cater to different markets. But at the end of the day, they have the same purpose and that’s to track your health and fitness. And they both do a good job of that. So how do you choose between the two? It’s all about seeing whose strengths are able to cater to your needs.

If you’re an iOS user and would like an affordable entry in the world of Apple Watches, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a good option. While it doesn’t have the fancier features that the new Apple Watch models do, it has the basics covered and that’s good enough for a lot of people. But if you want a modern yet discreet fitness tracker on your wrist that will be able to last you days, you’ll enjoy the Fitbit Luxe more. The available colorways are very stylish plus its battery life is way more dependable.
