eero Pro 6 vs eero 6 (2022): Comparing Wi-Fi Routers

The eero Pro 6 and eero 6 Wi-Fi routers are similar across the board, from their appearance to their features, such as Amazon Alexa support and built-in Zigbee smart home hub. Both can also cover a wide area and provide impressive speeds throughout your home. But needless to say, the “Pro” moniker isn’t just for show.

While it’s a lot more expensive than the standard model, the eero Pro 6 has the edge, offering a larger coverage, faster speeds and better Wi-Fi connectivity. However, that doesn’t automatically make it the best option for everyone. In other words, some might find it a bit of an overkill, and they’d be better off saving their money with the more affordable eero 6. On that note, we compare the two to hopefully help you make a more informed buying decision.

The eero Pro 6 (left) and eero 6 (right) are available in packs of three.

First off, the eero Pro 6 can cover up to 2,000 sq. ft., and the three-pack increases the range up to 6,000 sq. ft. In contrast, the eero 6 can cover up to 1,500 sq. ft., and to put two and two together, the three-pack can go up to 4,500 sq. ft.

Both support Wi-Fi 6, otherwise known as the 802.11ax standard. However, the eero Pro 6 is faster, capable of handling speeds up to 1 Gbps. Meanwhile, the eero 6 can only deal with speeds up to 500 Mbps or 900 Mbps when used as a router.

Last but not least, the eero Pro 6 is a tri-band Wi-Fi router with one 2.4 GHz band and two 5 GHz bands as opposed to the eero 6 only supporting one of each band.

In summary, the eero Pro 6 provides a wider coverage of up to 2,000 sq. ft. per unit, faster speeds of up to 1 Gbps and a more stable and reliable Wi-Fi connection because of its tri-band design.

Design and Build

Both the eero Pro 6 and eero 6 share the same design cues with only a few differences in form factor.

From an aesthetic perspective, the eero Pro 6 and eero 6 are similar in that they’re both white and sleek, and they can blend in with just about any home decor theme. Along a similar vein, they’re also so compact that finding the right spot for them is as easy as 1-2-3, even in cramped apartments or tight spaces. Speaking of similarities, both have two Ethernet ports on the back, which may not be enough for power users but more than enough for casual folks.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the eero 6 is a bit smaller, measuring 97mm x 99.4mm in width and depth, respectively, but it’s also a tad taller at 61.5mm. That’s compared to the eero Pro 6 that measures 52.6mm x 139mm x 139mm in height, width and depth.

Other Features

The eero Pro 6 and eero 6 are virtually the same in terms of software features.

A closer look at the eero app.

On the software side of things, the eero Pro 6 and eero 6 are hard to tell apart. For starters, the two have an integrated Zigbee smart home hub, allowing it to easily connect to Alexa-compatible devices. Put simply, that means you can use voice commands and ask Alexa which eero unit is the nearest to your smartphone in case you lose it or pause Wi-Fi, things like that.

Now the eero companion app is available on both Android and iOS. That’s where you can manage your network, block access to certain devices and more. Both can also support more than 75 devices connected simultaneously, which is a limit that’s difficult to reach.

In addition, the eero Pro 6 and eero 6 have WPA2-AES and WPA3-Personal, which basically means one is as secure as the other. As for parental controls, internet access can be paused or set to follow a specific schedule.

Verdict

Technically, the eero Pro 6 is better, but the eero 6 is more than enough for some users.

Choosing between the eero Pro 6 and eero 6 is really just a matter of how big your home is and how fast your internet connection is. If your house is relatively large, then you can count on the eero Pro 6 to cover every corner and provide 1 Gbps of speed, not to mention that it’s better equipped to prevent network congestion considering it’s a tri-band Wi-Fi router.

On the other hand, the eero 6 has a lower price tag, and in most cases, it’s the more practical choice. After all, it’s not slow, as it can support speeds up to 900 Mbps, and it can deliver complete coverage in small- and medium-sized houses. But seeing as it’s a dual-band router, it may not be as consistent in delivering a stable connection in comparison.
