Design and Features

The Cuisinart ICE-100 comes with a compressor while the Cuisinart ICE-70 doesn’t.

A look at the Cuisinart ICE-70 (left) and the Cuisinart ICE-100 (right).

When it comes to design, the Cuisinart ICE-70 has a taller and slimmer form than the shorter, but longer ICE-100. The Cuisinart ICE-70 is measured at 12.50″ x 12.88″ x 18.00″ and weighs 14 lbs, while the Cuisinart ICE-100 is measured at 13.75″ x 17.50″ x 13.50″ and weighs a hefty 32 lbs. Both are compact enough in size to be placed on a countertop comfortably.

As for the accessories, the Cuisinart ICE-70 comes with a 2-quart freezer bowl, an ice cream paddle and a lid with a removable measuring cup. The Cuisinart ICE-100, on the other hand, comes with a 1.5-quart bowl with handle, an ice cream paddle, a gelato paddle and a removable lid. Both ice cream makers feature a stainless steel exterior.

Features-wise, the ICE-100 trumps the ICE-70, which is expected since it is the more expensive model. The ICE-100 is an ice cream maker with a compressor, meaning that it has a built-in freezer. Since it is a compressor ice cream maker, you can make ice cream whenever you want, without having to use ice and salt or pre-chill the removable bowl, which is the case with the ICE-70. The ICE-70’s freezer bowl needs to be placed inside the freezer for at least 24 hours or overnight before you can make ice cream.

In addition to having a compressor, the ICE-100 also has a “Keep Cool” feature. This feature will keep your ice cream or gelato cool for 10 minutes after the timer has run down. While this is a nice feature, it’s not essential since you’ll want to place your ice cream inside the freezer anyway after the machine is done.

Controls

The Cuisinart ICE-70 has a better control layout than the ICE-100.

You can make ice cream easily with either the ICE-70 (left) or ICE-100 (right).

Both ice cream makers keep it simple when it comes to controls. However, the ICE-70 has the better control layout than the ICE-100. With the ICE-70, you have a start/stop button, a preset button for ice cream, gelato and sorbet, and up/down buttons to adjust the timer. It has an LCD screen to display the remaining time.

The ICE-100 also has an LCD screen and it has three control buttons: power, start/stop and timer. There is no preset for ice cream, gelato and sorbet, so you’ll need to know how much time is required for each recipe. Also, the timer button can only be adjusted in increments of one or five. To adjust the timer, you’ll need to either press or hold the button. Holding the button decreases the remaining time by five minutes while pressing will decrease it by one minute.

The control layout on the Cuisinart ICE-70 is more user friendly since there are dedicated up and down buttons for adjusting the timer.

Usage

The compressor in the Cuisinart ICE-100 is very convenient.

The Cuisinart ICE-100 comes with a bowl with handle, ice cream paddle and a gelato paddle.

Using both ice cream makers is easy, since all you have to do is pour in the ingredients and push the start button. With the ICE-70 though, you’ll need to pre-chill the freezer bowl first before you can use it. In contrast, the ICE-100 does not require you to do any pre-chilling since it has a compressor for freezing. It is recommended to pre-cool the ICE-100 for around 10-15 minutes so that it will have an easier time freezing.

When making ice cream, both units will do a very fine job. However, when making gelato, the ICE-100 will produce better results. Since gelato is more dense and has a lot less air in it than ice cream, the gelato paddle that comes with the ICE-100 is better suited than the regular ice cream paddle.

Once you’re done making ice cream, you can eat it already, but it is recommended that you place it in the freezer first since it is not properly frozen yet. The time it will take to achieve the right consistency will depend on your freezer, but usually, it will take around a couple of hours.

Maintenance

Both the Cuisinart ICE-70 and ICE-100 are easy to clean.

The ICE-70 comes with a freezer bowl and an ice cream paddle.

Cleaning both the Cuisinart ICE-70 and ICE-100 is easy. The body for both machines can be easily wiped down with a damp cloth since they have a stainless steel exterior. Same with the chamber, you can easily wipe it down if there’s any remaining mixture.

The removable parts are also easily cleaned in the sink. All you need is warm water and soap and you’ll be able to clean them in no time. Do take note, all these removable parts are not dishwasher safe, so you have no choice but to clean them manually. However, since these parts are so easy to clean, this is hardly an issue at all.

Verdict

If you are on a budget, the ICE-70 is a great ice cream maker, but if money is not a problem, then the ICE-100 is the better buy.

Both ice cream makers are great if you want to make ice cream at home. However, if you want the better product, then the Cuisinart ICE-100 should be your choice. It has a compressor so you can make ice cream whenever you want, you don’t have to freeze the bowl for a long period before doing so. Also, it comes with an additional gelato paddle so you can make better gelato with it. The downsides to the ICE-100 are its clunky timer control and it’s higher price tag.

If you want a more affordable ice cream maker, the Cuisinart ICE-70 is a very good machine. It has better controls than the ICE-100 and it is significantly less expensive. However, if you want to use it, you’ll need to plan at least a day ahead, due to the freezing bowl needing to be placed in the freezer. If you don’t mind that, then the Cuisinart ICE-70 is a great buy.
