Bissell Little Green vs SpotClean Pro (2022): Comparing Portable Carpet Cleaners

If you’re in the market for a carpet cleaner, Bissell is one of the best brands to look into. One of the company’s entry-level models is the original Bissell Little Green clean machine. Compact and portable, the Little Green offers modest suction power at an affordable price. For a cleaner that can tackle more floor surface area, however, the Bissell SpotClean Pro is a better option. It comes with a more powerful suction, too, but does so in exchange for being heavier and pricier. But is that all there is to it? To know more, check out the comparison below.

Bissell’s SpotClean Pro is larger and heavier than the Little Green.

The original Bissell Little Green sports a bean-shaped design with a wide carry handle on top. Its main body is sandwiched by two water tanks โ€” one for the cleaning solution, the other for dirt collection. Meanwhile, an extendable hose wraps around the base with a cleaning head that hangs on the back. Going by its brand name, the Little Green comes in an avocado-green color finish.

In contrast, the Bissell SpotClean Pro looks like an oversized helmet. Viewed from the front, the SpotClean has a narrower profile that’s R2D2-esque. Because of its taller form, the machine’s flexible hose hangs on the side. On the other hand, the power cords and attachments are located at the back. The SpotClean’s water tanks are placed one on top of the other, too.

With a larger tank capacity, the SpotClean Pro is heavier than the Little Green. Its carry handle is also smaller, so if you want portability, the Little Green will have the edge. However, Bissell’s SpotClean Pro boasts a longer power cord and hose than the Little Green’s.

Cleaning Power and Performance

The SpotClean Pro is more powerful than the Little Green carpet cleaner.

While the Little Green (left) can handle small jobs, the SpotClean Pro (right) offers superior suction power.

When it comes to power, the newer Bissell SpotClean Pro has the edge over the Little Green. The SpotClean, after all, is equipped with a 5.7-amp motor. This rivals some of Bissell’s own upright carpet cleaners. User reviews highlight the SpotClean’s ability to suck both dirt and the cleaning solution efficiently, allowing carpet and upholstery to dry faster.

With the Little Green, you’re getting a more modest 3-amp motor. Although not as powerful as the SpotClean, the Little Green can handle day-to-day messes. Food and beverage stains, for instance, are easily lifted from the carpet. While stubborn stains might require a more powerful cleaner, the Little Green is more than capable of handling small cleaning jobs and built-up dirt.

In terms of dirt collection, the SpotClean wins again. Bissell’s powerful carpet cleaner has a 3/4 gallon tank capacity that allows you to clean more than the Little Green’s 47-ounce tank.

Features and Accessories

Both the Bissell Little Green and SpotClean Pro come with a pair of cleaning attachments.

Out of the box, there are a few Bissell Little Green attachments. The standard cleaning head you get is the 3-inch Tough Stain Tool. With this attachment, you can scrub away stains, loosen them, and lift them more easily. The Little Green also comes with a HydroRinse Self-Cleaning Hose Tool. As its name suggests, it rinses the machine’s hose after every use.

If you opt for the SpotClean Pro, you’re also getting two accessories. Like the Little Green, the SpotClean Pro has a Tough Stain Tool. This is useful for tackling stain or grease on upholstery and carpets. However, Bissell also includes a 6-inch Stair Tool with the SpotClean Pro. Designed with a wider cleaning path, the Stair Tool allows homeowners to clean the edges and treads of stairs better.

Cleaning Solution

Bissell’s Little Green and SpotClean Pro carpet cleaners work best when paired with Bissell’s cleaning formulas.

Bissell Little Green vs SpotClean Pro Formula
Here’s a look at the trial-size cleaning formulas included with the Little Green (left) and SpotClean Pro (right).

To make the most of Bissell’s carpet cleaners, they’re usually paired with cleaning formulas. On the Little Green, the trial solution included is the Bissell Spot & Stain. It’s a powerful mixture formulated with Febreze’s Spring and Renewal Scent. Ideal for soft surfaces, the Spot and Stain is also pet and family safe.

With the SpotClean Pro, you get the PRO MAX Clean + Protect formula. Bissell shares it’s the company’s most powerful solution for tackling ground-in dirt and stains. It’s also effective in removing tough, underlying odors in heavily soiled areas. Like the Little Green’s formula, the PRO MAX Clean + Protect comes in an 8-ounce trial size.

The Bissell SpotClean Pro is a more powerful carpet cleaner than the Little Green. However, the Little Green is easier to use and far more portable than the SpotClean Pro.

Best if you’re on a budget

Bissell SpotClean Pro

Ideal for deeper cleans

While vaccums are great they’re not specialized enough to tackle deep-seeded dirt. If you want a deeper clean of your home’s carpets, rugs, and upholstery, get a carpet cleaner instead. Now, the Bissell Little Green is the standard model to get. It’s compact, lightweight, and easy to assemble. The machine has ample suction power to tackle most day-to-day messes as well.

However, based on specs alone, the Bissell SpotClean Pro is a better choice. While it doesn’t have a self-cleaning hose tool, you do get a wide-head stair attachment for more efficient cleaning. The sleek-looking cleaner boasts a more powerful suction and a larger tank capacity, too. If you want to clean and dry your rugs, carpet, or upholstery faster, then the SpotClean Pro is the way to go.
