Both speakers are small and they offer excellent portability. Measuring 8.3 x 2.5 x 2.7 inches, the Beats Pill+ has a slightly smaller build than the JBL Charge 4, which measures 8.66 x 3.74 x 3.66 inches. They are lightweight as well, with the Beats Pill+ weighing 1.5 lbs and the JBL Charge 4 at 2.1 lbs. When it comes to portability, both are excellent and you can carry either of them using one hand easily.

Since they are designed for portable use, these speakers feel sturdy and durable. The Beats Pill+ speaker has metallic grilles to protect the speaker while the JBL Charge 4’s speaker is wrapped in tight knit fabric for protection. One advantage of the JBL Charge 4 is that it comes with an IPX7 rating, meaning that it is waterproof and can be submerged underwater for up to 30 minutes without getting damaged. The Beats Pill+, on the other hand, does not come with any resistance rating against the elements.

Features and Sound Quality

You can answer calls with the Beats Pill+, but the JBL Charge 4 offers superior sound quality when listening to music.

beats pill vs jbl charge 4 features and sound quality
Both speakers have clicky control buttons that are easy to press.

One advantage that the Beat Pill+ has over the JBL Charge 4 is its speakerphone function. You can answer calls with the speaker since it has a built-in mic. You don’t have this feature with the JBL Charge 4, so it is a consideration if you’re choosing between these two speakers.

To answer calls with the Beats Pill+, you just need to press the multipurpose “b” button. The “b” button also functions as the play/pause, skip and previous track button when listening to music. It is also the button that you press when you want to pair the speaker with another Bluetooth device. At the left and right of the “b” button are the power and volume up/down buttons.

On the JBL Charge 4, you have more dedicated buttons for different functions. It has a JBL Connect+ button, for pairing with other JBL Connect+ speakers, volume up/down, power, Bluetooth and a playback/pause/skip button. The JBL Charge does not have a “previous track” button or function.

When it comes to audio quality, the JBL Charge 4 has a more balanced sound than the Beats Pill+. The JBL Charge 4 has accurate mid-range, slightly recessed highs and decent bass. The Beats Pill+, on the other hand, has a recessed mid-range, so vocals are not quite as detailed, a boomy bass and slightly piercing treble at higher volume. We prefer the sound quality of the JBL Charge 4 over the Beats Pill+.

Connectivity

Both speakers can be used wirelessly and with a 3.5mm audio cable.

The Beats Pill+ can also be paired with another Beats Pill+ speaker for stereo output. Using the Beat Pill+ app, you can also pair the speaker with multiple Beats Pill+ speakers.

The JBL Charge 4 can also be paired with another JBL portable speaker that has the JBL Connect+ feature for stereo sound. Similar to the Beats Pill+, the JBL Charge 4 can also be paired with multiple speakers to listen to music.
