Amazfit vs Apple Watch (2021): What Do These Smartwatches Offer?

Amazfit boasts an extensive catalog of smartwatches, including the rugged Amazfit T-Rex and budget-friendly Bip series. The GTS lineup, however, is the favorite among fashion-conscious crowds. Much like its predecessor, the Amazfit GTS 2 is quite the looker. Sporting a rectangular display and crafted from aluminum alloy, it’s a watch that invites comparisons to the Apple Watch.

Whether or not it’s deliberate, however, isn’t the big question. Priced a little higher than other Amazfit wearables, the GTS 2 is expected to deliver more. But does it? In our comparison below, we check how it fares against a more premium device like the Apple Watch Series 6.

Design and Hardware

The Amazfit GTS 2 and Apple Watch Series 6 are modern and fashionable wearables.

Although technically a budget smartwatch, the Amazfit GTS 2 doesn’t look like one. With a rectangular display crafted from curved 3D glass, the wearable looks sleek and stylish. While it won’t be mistaken for an Apple Watch, it’s easy to see why the GTS 2 draws such comparisons. Unlike the original GTS, the latest iteration looks dressier rather than sporty.

Now, both Amazfit and Apple Watch wearables feature scratch-resistant displays. On the GTS 2, a diamond-like carbon coating lends the screen its strength. Stainless steel or titanium Watch Series 6 models, on the other hand, feature durable sapphire crystal displays. Meanwhile, most of the sensors that make these watches “smart” are on the back, contained within waterproof cases.

The Cupertino-based tech giant’s Watch Series 6, however, wastes no time to hush talks about resemblances. Apple’s wearable, for instance, uses a Retina display that offers higher resolutions compared to the AMOLED screen of the GTS 2. The Watch Series 6’s digital crown is located off-center on its side, as well, rather than smack in the middle like the Amazfit GTS 2. Plus, you can get the Watch 6 in two sizes: 40mm and 46mm.

Apple’s flagship wearable also comes in different variants. Aside from colors and materials, you can get the Watch 6 with sportier Nike edition bands or more luxurious Hermes edition straps. The Amazfit GTS 2, on the other hand, only comes in one size and 3 colors.

Sports and Fitness Tracking

Although the Amazfit GTS 2 has more built-in sports modes, the Apple Watch has a more intuitive fitness app plus integration with Apple Fitness+.

Telling the time is almost a secondary feature of today’s smartwatches. Instead, wearables are primarily used for fitness tracking. The Amazfit GTS 2 and Apple Watch Series 6 are no different. Both wearables track standard metrics like steps, distance, and calories burned. They also come preloaded with several workouts. On the Amazfit GTS 2, you get an impressive 90 built-in sports modes. There’s also auto-detection for 6 of these activities.

Apple’s Watch 6, on the other hand, only has a handful of supported workout types. Nonetheless, the intuitive Fitness app allows for clearer visualization of your progress vis-à-vis your fitness goals. In addition, the Watch Series 6 works with Apple Fitness+, a subscription program offering immersive fitness activities anchored on your Apple Watch device. Here, personal metrics are integrated into the exercises, allowing for more engaging workouts.

Health Features

While the Amazfit GTS 2 has standard health monitoring tools, it’s hard to argue against the Apple Watch’s more advanced features.

While both devices come with a plethora of health features, blood oxygen monitoring is arguably the most talked about.

Health monitoring also features prominently in the Amazfit GTS 2 and Apple Watch Series 6. Both devices, for instance, offer 24/7 heart rate monitoring, including alerts of abnormal readings. Using heart rate readings, these wearables can even keep an eye on your stress levels. Based on user feedback, Apple’s premium device does have the edge over Amazfit. Some reviewers have mentioned that on more intense activities, the GTS 2’s heart rate sensors tend to fumble.

With the Watch 6, Apple has finally introduced a native sleep tracking app, a functionality that’s also available on the Amazfit GTS 2. The talk of the town, however, is still blood oxygen monitoring. A staple feature in countless other wearables, they’re present in the Amazfit GTS 2 and Apple Watch Series 6. Nonetheless, the blood oxygen readings for both devices are not intended for medical purposes.

As the more expensive device, there are a few features on the Apple Watch that are missing on the Amazfit. The latter, for instance, doesn’t have an ECG app, a technology pioneered in wearables by Apple itself. Mindful of the times, the Apple Watch Series 6 even has hand-washing detection that automatically sets a timer when you’re washing your hands.

Smart Features and Battery Life

The Apple Watch has better smart features, while the Amazfit GTS 2 has the edge when it comes to battery life.

For an affordable smartwatch, the Amazfit GTS 2 comes with a plethora of smart features. When paired with your smartphone, the wearable alerts users with both message and call notifications. Events are also synced to your device, and there’s access to more practical apps like alarms and weather updates. Voice assistants and contactless payments are also supported, although the latter relies on Alipay, which has limited use in the US.

Apple’s flagship wearable comes with a similar feature set, one that’s even bound to expand with the watchOS 8. Taking calls even without your phone is also more convenient with the Apple Watch than the Amazfit GTS 2. On the latter, you only get Bluetooth phone calls, which requires your smartphone nearby. With a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch, you can stay connected even without your phone.

In terms of battery life, however, the Amazfit has the edge over the Apple Watch. The GTS 2 can last up to 20 days when running basic functions. With everyday use, the watch boasts an impressive 7 days of battery life. Amazfit shares that even under heavy usage, the GTS 2 will still last at least 3.5 days. That’s quite the number compared to the Apple Watch Series 6’s 18-hour battery life.

Verdict

If you’re on a budget, the Amazfit GTS 2 is a solid option. But if you’re an iPhone user willing to splurge, the Apple Watch Series 6 is the best smartwatch to get.

The Amazfit GTS 2 is a feature-packed smartwatch with an attractive design. When it comes to fitness and health, it comes with all the staples expected in a wearable. For Amazfit, the GTS 2 is a combination of its stylish GTR range and its more fitness-focused watches like the Amazfit T-Rex. If you want to own a smartwatch without spending a lot, then the GTS 2 is a solid option.

But if you’re an iPhone user with money to spare, the Apple Watch is undoubtedly the best wearable to get. Apple’s flagship wearable simply works like no other within the iOS and watchOS ecosystem. And while battery life may not be its strong point, the combination of style and functionality — like in the Apple Watch Series 6 — more than makes up for this weakness.
