Amazfit Bip U Pro vs Bip S (2021): Which Budget Smartwatch Should You Get?

When Amazfit launched the original Bip watch back in 2018, the device drew loyal consumers impressed by its battery life. Since then, the budget-friendly brand has expanded its catalog of fitness-focused wearables. Two of the most popular additions to the lineup include the Amazfit Bip U Pro and the Amazfit Bip S.

Although both are Bip watches, there are some noticeable differences between the two. The Amazfit Bip U Pro, for instance, boasts more sports modes, while the Bip S delivers a longer battery life. Bip U’s flagship wearable also features a more refined design compared to the Bip S. Below, we see how these budget wearables fare against each other in key areas.

Design and Hardware

The Amazfit Bip U Pro has a larger screen and features more sensors compared to the Amazfit Bip S.

Amazfit Bip U Pro vs Bip S Design Comparison
The Bip U Pro’s larger screen offers higher resolutions and more vibrant colors than the Bip S.

Amazfit’s Bip U Pro and Bip S follow the design DNA of the brand’s Bip lineup. Both devices are crafted from polycarbonate and come with a silicone rubber strap. In the box, they also include two sizes of these straps for a better fit. The Bip U Pro, however, is slightly smaller in size. Despite this, the latest iteration of Amazfit’s Bip series has thinner bezels, translating to more screen real estate.

With the Bip U Pro, you’re getting a 1.43-inch full color IPS LCD. The Bip S, on the other hand, sports a lower resolution 1.28-inch Transflective Color TFT display. Given how these wearables are used, Amazfit has also equipped its touch screens with Gorilla Glass and anti-fingerprint coating. While it may seem like a game of inches, the Pro’s larger screen makes using the watch more immersive and intuitive.

Inside these devices, you’ll find the standard sensors. Amazfit equips the Bip U Pro and Bip S with its trademarked BioTracker. The Pro, however, gets the 2.0 version of the optical sensors. Accelerometer and geomagnetic sensors are also key components of these budget wearables, although the Bip U Pro again has the edge with the inclusion of a gyroscope.

Users can get the Amazfit Bip S in four colors โ€” red orange, carbon black, white rock, and warm pink. The Amazfit Bip Pro, on the other hand, is available in black, green, and pink. The two wearables are waterproof up to 50 meters.

Activity and Fitness Tracking

Amazfit’s Bip U Pro watch comes with more sports modes compared to the Bip S.

On the Amazfit Bip U Pro, users can track 60 sports modes, a huge upgrade over the 10 sports modes on the Amazfit Bip S.

Like many of today’s smartwatches, the Amazfit Bip U Pro and Bip S come with a slew of activity tracking features. With their sensors, both devices can track key metrics like steps, distance, and calories burned. They can also tell you how long you’ve been idle. All this information can easily be accessed via a dedicated screen on the wearables as well. Other fitness metrics can be accessed and managed through the companion app, Zepp.

Where the Bip U Pro has the edge, however, is sports tracking. The watch comes with 60+ pre-loaded sports modes, a far cry from the 10 modes on the Bip S. Some of the activities tracked are walking, outdoor cycling, swimming, and yoga. On the Bip U Pro, the extensive modes are neatly grouped across 10 categories, too. In addition, users can choose to customize the information they want to see on their device during a workout.

Health Monitoring

The Amazfit Bip U Pro also has the edge over the Bip S when it comes to health features.

Amazfit’s Bip U Pro watch comes with SpO2 monitoring, stress monitoring, and breathing exercises.

A key feature of many smartwatches today is their optical heart sensors. On the Amazfit Bip U Pro and Bip S, heart rate tracking can be continuous (24/7) or on-demand. The Bip U Pro, however, offers more reliable and accurate readings thanks to its BioTrack 2.0 sensor. Readings are synced to the Zepp app as well.

Both budget wearables have sleep monitoring capabilities, too. Standard data about your nocturnal habits include a breakdown between deep and light sleep proportions. But data isn’t just presented; it comes with actionable insights as well. With the Bip U Pro, however, you get information about REM sleep and sleep regularity as well. Although the feature is still being refined, the watch also monitors sleep breathing quality.

The Bip U Pro’s advantage over the Bip S doesn’t stop with heart rate and sleep monitoring. Amazfit’s top-rated wearable brings blood oxygen level monitoring to the Bip lineup. In addition, the Pro supports key health features like menstrual cycle tracking and all-day stress monitoring.

Smart Features and Battery Life

The Bip U Pro leads when it comes to smart features, but the Bip S still has the edge in terms of battery life.

Amazfit’s Bip U Pro enjoys Alexa integrations (left); the Bip S comes with your standard alerts and apps (right).

Alexa built-in is one of the key additions to the Amazfit Bip U Pro. Since the Bip U Pro doesn’t have WiFi connectivity (like the Bip S), this voice assistant support comes in handy. Both watches also come with your usual smart features like app notifications and incoming call alerts. Now you can’t reply to messages or answer calls via the watch, but it’s still a nice way to keep your phone in your pocket.

Outside of smart notifications, you also get the standard app โ€” weather, alarm, and calendar. There’s also mobile music control, although it’s still a bit buggy on both the Bip U Pro and Bip S. Unfortunately, you can’t store music on the watches for offline playback. Like most wearables, however, both Bip devices allow you to customize watch faces. Other than that, the Bip U Pro and Bip S offer pretty lean smart features, with the Pro having a bit of an edge.

True to their origins, the Bip U Pro and Bip S are best known for their impressive battery life. Here, it’s the Bip S which has the advantage. Although it comes with a smaller 200mAh battery compared to the Pro’s 230mAh, you get a solid 15 days on typical usage. Amazfit shares that stripped down to its basic functions, the Bip S can last up to 40 days on a single charge. With the Bit U Pro, regular use will give you about 9 days of battery life.

The Amazfit Bip U Pro is a more compelling purchase over the Amazfit Bip S.

Premium smartwatch brands like Apple, Fitbit, and Garmin offer budget or lite alternatives to their flagship models. However, they can still break the bank. If you’re looking for an under $100 wearable, then Amazfit’s Bip U Pro and Bip S are worth a look. Despite having more features, however, the Amazfit Bip U Pro is similarly priced as the Amazfit Bip S. That alone is a compelling reason to opt for the Bip U Pro instead. As Amazfit’s latest budget wearable, you get improved heart sensors, more sports modes, and even Alexa compatibility. So unless you fancy nostalgia, it’s hard to justify opting for the Bip S instead of the Bip U Pro.
