Gaming laptops these days are starting to get thinner, making them seem a little too fragile for vigorous gaming. If you’re not into that look, you’re in luck because both the Acer Nitro 5 and the ASUS TUF A15 are not the dainty kind. They pack on quite a bit of heft and sport a rugged look so you definitely don’t have to be very delicate with them. While these two models have a more old school gaming laptop silhouette, they do away with the garish colors and are decked out in all black instead. This gives them a touch of sleekness that helps them fit into 2021.

As for keyboards, the one on the Acer Nitro 5 isn’t the easiest to use. Red on black isn’t a very legible combination so unless you’re in a very dim room or basking in sunlight, chances are you’re going to have a tough time deciphering which key does what. Fortunately, the keyboard situation is much better on the ASUS TUF A15. They keys are RGB backlit so the letters are easy enough to read. To boot, the WASP keys have a translucent glow to them so they’re extra painless to find.

When it comes to displays, both the Acer Nitro 5 and the ASUS TUF A15 have large 15.6-inch screens that deliver great 1080p performance. However, the ASUS TUF A15 is able to edge out the Acer Nitro 5 when it comes to fluidity of motion. While the Acer Nitro 5 makes do with the standard 60Hz refresh rate, the ASUS TUF A15 comes in a version that can deliver an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. This makes the ASUS TUF A15 above average even if it’s priced affordably.

When you play on the Acer Nitro 5, there’s no hiding the fact that it’s a budget gaming laptop. It’s quite limited in the RAM, GPU, and CPU departments so expect to run into problems such as frame drops if you try to play blockbuster AAA games on it. But if you’re a determined budget gamer, you can make do with this laptop and play demanding games on it, just as long as you dial back on the settings. You’ll get a more consistent frame rate this way and you’re also less likely to run into any performance issues. Of course, don’t expect to be able to experience these games in their full glory.

As for the ASUS TUF A15, it’s equipped with the newest hardware from Nvidia and AMD. This means that it has a lot of potential despite being a budget gaming laptop. For starters, it has the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H as its CPU. While it may not be AMD’s flagship mobile processor, the fact that it has 8 cores and 16 threads means that it’s really able to give the TUF A15 the kind of power you’d find in more expensive gaming laptops. This is complemented by the Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU. Again, it’s not flagship level but it’s able to provide a great 1080p experience. In a nutshell, ASUS did a good job of picking good components for the TUF A15–ones that don’t spike up the price but are able to deliver excellent performance.
